Old Technology, But Stll Works

Scott Worthington, Amazon
23 June 2013
  • Summary: I have had this router for 7 or 8 years. I had it disconnected for a few years, then reinstalled it a year ago after getting my first WiFi device. I have only had one problem, recently I had to reset it because my wifi was really slow.

Last forever

Joshua H., Newegg
9 August 2011
  • Pros: Cheap, good connectivity,* Last forever it seems. Purchased it in late 2004 and it still works to this day.
  • Cons: Its never been that great for gaming. *I tried to get it to work for lan parties back when I first got it but under load it would reset itself constantly.

d link wireless router rocks

Riq, Amazon
23 October 2010
  • Summary: While the setup disc that came with the router did not help me set it up, I was able to call the manufacturer for support. It did cost me an additional twenty-five dollars to get their help since the product was out of warranty but I was very satisfied with the overall experience.

Good Wireless connection

Thomas L., Newegg
5 April 2008
  • Pros: Good basic wireless/LAN connection for the price. Never had a signal problem. Owned this since 5/2005 and still running
  • Cons: The host software can be a bit confusing at. Setting up port forwarding still leaves me confused at the end of the day.

good router for a couple of years

Matthew J., Newegg
7 January 2008
  • Summary: Wired connection works fine with no power cycling required.
  • Pros: Good router with very infrequent power cycling required. Has been great for several years now.
  • Cons: Just recently developed a problem with the wireless connection and requires frequent resets, but have owned it for several years, so maybe to be expected?

Great little device/no big probs

LORINA L., Newegg
11 June 2007
  • Summary: Small, compact however easy to knock over. The antenna come off which is a nice feature I suppose.
  • Pros: Appears to be easy to use, great diagrams to show you where to plug things in especially if you are technically challenged. Good for the price I haven't had any problems with being able to connect. I purchased this item from a store which gave me a rebate but for some reason newegg doesn't have t...
  • Cons: Difficult to figure out how to set up a password, doesn't let you change the sign in name must use Admin or user as a sign in name. Took me around 2 hrs to figure out how to set up a pass word and by that time I was frustrated. Passwords also must be set in a specific manner you can only use lett...

satisfied

Will B., Newegg
27 May 2007
  • Summary: Cute little thing in the corner with decent range.
  • Pros: Cheap, got it with the rebate. Best choice for the price. This router isn't the best out there but if you don't need that don't worry about it. Hasn't died on me yet....
  • Cons: Dynamic IP won't work with my ISP so it's just set to Static.

DynDNS comment

Daniel B., Newegg
13 May 2007
  • Summary: The DynNS feature of this router is no longer compatible with the (free) DynDNS service. If you want your dynamic IP (assigned by your ISP) to be reported to a DNS server, you must now run client software on a local PC, instead of letting your DI-524 router handle that chore.
  • Pros: Still a good router
  • Cons: None

Pretty good

Daniel B., Newegg
12 May 2007
  • Summary: I bought two of these (one for spare) two years ago and just started using it full-time after obtaining DSL service. No problem so far after one month: have not had to reset once. I had to change the router address so as not to conflict with my DSL modem's IP address.
  • Pros: Does what it's supposed to do. Has decent web-browser configuration screens. Port forwarding, firewall rules, MAC restrictions, dynamic DNS. Can lower radio output if you desire. Antenna is detachable. D-Link's support site is better than average.
  • Cons: No SPI at this price point. Router restarts after certain configuration changes—confusing until you get used to it. Wireless range is merely adequate.

WEP

Anonymous, Newegg
27 March 2007
  • Summary: Cable they sent was way too short. I would've liked it to be a lot longer. I run NAT and DHCP off a server so I don't know the capabilities of this router in that regard. I only use it as an access point.
  • Pros: Makes a good connection across two stories of my house. Wall mountable.
  • Cons: Doesn't automatically create WEP keys. It's not a big deal if you have another router to make WEP keys - just copy and paste. If you don't have another router lying around, it's a pain.
