Summary: I purchased this product after hours and hours of research and based on all the good reviews. My honest opinion based on trying the product for over 3 weeks is that the product is terrible. Please read the negative reviews carefully as they are all true. I have had more connection drops and bandwidth issues with this product when even compared to the 3-year old netgear router that was half the price of this one. Please stay away!
Summary: I bought this router because of the raving reviews. Maybe I have a dud, but this device has given me unsatisfactory performance, given the price. I'd be tolerant of these flaws for a $20-$50 router, but for this price, you expect things to be perfect. When playing games, it is jarring to be disconnected halfway through every game. I've run ping tests to the router so I know for certain that it's the connection to the router that's failing.
Pros: Great range/speeds, when it's working.
Cons: Constant disconnects over wired connections. Large (~10 second) lag spikes over wifi, causing disconnections from games.
Excerpt: I purchased two of these routers. Out of the box, both suggested a firmware update. One worked fine, but the other router froze during the update and went into "rescue" mode (on/off light slowly blinking). After four hours of web searching and trying various reset combinations to no avail, I returned the unit.
Excerpt: I bought this router and attempted the setup yesterday. The "Quick" set up wizard will hardly even function. Tried on 3 different computers, without firewall and antivirus, different browsers...the web pages just hang forever. Repeated refreshing will sometimes show a partial page and, on the rare occasion, the whole page. Email to ASUS support resulted in suggesting a hard reset. Really?...like I wouldn't try that?? Not very happy so far...
Summary: I don't understand why an all-singing all-dancing product like this is offered for sale when the specification makes no mention that I can see of IPv6 support. Does it support IPv6? If not it's already obsolete. The last blocks of IPv4 addresses were assigned months ago. Would I buy one? Absolutely not!
Excerpt: Unpacked the router, finished initial setup. The router was working great and then all of a sudden it just died for no apparent reason. The power supply has a blue light on it when it's plugged in, but when you plug that into the router (even with the router's on/off switch in the 'off' position), the blue light goes out.
Excerpt: I just now spent the past 20 minutes having to re-install my old router because this router just died on me in a week of use! I have no clue why. Haven't even had a chance to call either ASUS or B&H yet to figure out where I go first to get this fixed.
Pros: Easy To Set Up, Fast, Fast Connection Speed, Reliable connection, Secure Connection
Excerpt: Here are my reason why: I was looking for the N router from which I expected much fast response and based on several +ve reviews on this ASUS RT-N56U I decided to buy this product. this 1st unit that came just did not power on, so I had to return it to get an replacement. the 2nd unit did turn on but the speed is NOT as good as my old 6 years old Linksys WRT54G router, its SLOWER THAN THAT.
Excerpt: Bought the ASUS on the basis of CNET and other positive reviews. Connected to a wired ethernet port, but not directly to the modem. After an hour with ASUS (in their defense they provided quick response) they thought I needed "special settings" from my provider, Comcast. Another hour with Comcast (confirming there are no "special settings") and yet another hour with Comcast Signature Service got the router working briefly when connected directly to the modem - but not...
