Apple AirPort Extreme

PC Magazine
16 December 2008

Although the AirPort lacks many of the features that other wireless routers in our roundup have, it certainly serves its intended purpose and target audience in providing basic and secure wireless network access for Apple laptop and desktop systems. The system is Wi-Fi compliant and can support Windows PCs.

Apple Airport Extreme Base Station with Gigabit Ethernet

PC Magazine
14 December 2008
  • Conclusion: This is a solid draft-n router choice for Apple users, who get the usual sleek Apple design and easy setup, along with dual-band capability, but Windows users will largely be left out in the cold.
  • Pros: Good performer. No appreciable throughput drop with WPA2/AES security. Easy Mac-based setup. Can share a USB hard drive over an Apple network.
  • Cons: Apple-centric—not much thought given to Windows users. No firewall, even though this is intended as a home Internet gateway. Awful performance with security other than WPA2.
