Wii Sports (Wii) Review

  • Summary: In trying out various Wii titles while having friends over the house, Wii Sports was hands down the favorite. Great for parties or for showing off to non-gamers what is possible on the Wii, Wii Sports is probably the only game I've ever played in which it is just as fun to watch others play as it is to play for yourself. Nintendo has really hit the nail on the head with this title. It's the one game that can convert non-gamers into giving video games a try.

  • Excerpt: is a simple collection of sports mini-games. It's a rather good selection of sports, though. Tennis, golf, bowling, baseball, and boxing are all included. Tennis has you playing a single match, best of 3 or best of 5. Golf is split between a 9-hole round - beginner, intermediate, and hard (the difficulties just being different sections of the 9-hole game). Bowling is a full 10 frames. Baseball is 3 innings, and boxing is a 3 round match.

  • Excerpt: Gym class is the worst part of a school’s curriculum. There are few things more cringe-inducing than the shrill screech of a coach’s whistle. The morning sun turns the basketball courts into giant frying pans. The students around you are in a constant state of exhaustion due to their lacking physical skills. You can hear them grunting with each agonizing push-up. Their faces are the color of mashed tomatoes and flooded with sweat and tears.

  • Summary: So the Wii comes with a free game. The question is, is it any good? Or is it like those free tissue packs people in front of grocery stores give out, rough around the edges and non-reusable?

  • Conclusion: Excellent game for the price (it's free!) and should not be missed. While Boxing may feel like Nintendo was just saying "Hey look at us, we can do this now!" it still holds promise for the future. Nintendo proves that motion can be incorporated into accessible and challenging games for both casual and hardcore gamers with just tennis and bowling. Since it's hard to judge something that is free, I will score this as though it were a retail purchase.
