The game is set in the Tri-City, a fictional city with four boroughs. These four boroughs are called Palm Harbor, Port Cresent, Gold Coast Mountains, and Sunset Hills. There, players take on the role of an undercover police officer who seeks to take down an international crime smuggling syndicate of street racers and car thieves. To do so, this police officer must explore the city’s criminal underground while completing a number of dangerous tasks including stealing cop cars and winning races. To help players, an open-world map to Tri-City is available. Using this map, players can navigate the city with a large highway system and over a hundred miles of open roads.
Players of Need for Speed: Undercover can choose from four different race types which include Circuit, Sprint, Highway Battle, and Cops & Robbers. Players and their opponents repeatedly race around a specific route in Circuit races while a specified finishing point is set in Sprint races. Highway Battle involves large and busy highways with lots of cop trouble. Cops & Robbers, which is played offline for the Wii, allows users to choose between playing the role of a robber who needs to avoid the cops while trying to pick up and drop off a package at certain points in the city or the cop who is tasked to keep the robber from making the drop.
