Mario Kart Wii

The Mario Kart racing game for the Nintendo Wii was released in the US on April 2008. Developed by Nintendo EAD, this game is the sixth installment in the Mario Kart franchise and is the second to include support for the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection (WFC) online service.

Each purchase of a Mario Kart Wii package comes with a Wheel accessory, in which the Wii Remote plugs in to. Other input methods include the Wii Remote with the Nunchuck, the Classic Controller and the GameCube Controller.

Similar to the previous installments, Mario Kart Wii features an assortment of characters and locations from Mario games. For this game, Nintendo has added motorbikes in addition to the karts. New features also include multiplayer racing with up to twelve players, the free WFC service and the Mario Kart Channel for the Wii Menu.

Gameplay

In Mario Kart Wii, the player can choose from 24 different Mario characters. The characters are separated by weight class, with their weight affecting the type of kart or motorbike available to them. Each kart/motorbike varies in weight, speed, acceleration, handling, drift, off-road and mini-turbo characteristics.

The game features up to 32 different race tracks, each with its own unique layout, obstacles and hazards. It also includes ten battle courses. In each track, there are item boxes that the player can drive to get various power ups like Mega Mushrooms.

Mario Kart Wii has several game modes: Grand Prix (including an unlockable Mirror Mode), Time Trial, Versus, and Battle Mode. The latter offers Balloon Battle and Coin Runners races.

Other Features

With the Nintendo WFC, a player can race against up to 11 others in an online race or battle. Players can also text chat with each other during races.

The Mario Kart Channel is an optional install for the Wii Menu. Running independently of the game, it provides the player quick access to current game rankings and saved time trial downloadables. The channel also shows the user which of their friends are online.
