Battle of the Bands Review

Cheat Code Central
31 May 2008
  • Conclusion: Battle of the Bands wraps a neat idea in a novel presentation. It's a quirky game that's best enjoyed in short bursts with a friend. The challenge and gameplay will feel weak over the long run for those who've been spoiled by expert-level sessions of Guitar Hero and Rock Band, although rhythm game novices should find it a good entry point into the genre.

  • Conclusion: Battle of the Bands may have some control wobbliness, its momentum meter may be faked entirely, and its attacks may be more bark than they are bite, but dang it if the game isn't still fun. Get a few people together, grab the kids, and pop the game on Easy for a night of laughs and fun entertainment.
  • Pros: Genre-mixing songs is pure genius, Attacks are goofy, yet fun, Unexpectedly addictive
  • Cons: Controls are a bit loose, Attacks could be fleshed out better

  • Excerpt: The success of Guitar Hero and Rock Band was sure to spark a surge in music games, one of which is Battle of the Bands for the Wii.  However, Battle of the Bands' style of play shares more in common with Dance Dance Revolution than it does with Guitar Hero.

Battle of the Bands Review

  • Excerpt: It was sometime near the end of Battle of the Bands ' country-latin mashup of Tenacious D's incredible song "Master Exploder" that I realized this game was brilliant. The fusing of two out of the game's five very different musical genres into a bunch of (mostly) popular music is a really great idea, and made for something that sounded really goofy yet uniquely fun. But I wasn't actually playing - once I started to, my opinion went downhill from there.

Battle of the Bands review (WII)

  • Excerpt: That will then send your chosen projectile toward your opponent, who should deflect it. If he doesn't, you score a lot of points and bragging rights. You're also rewarded by the sound of your own band singing. In heated matches, gangsters and hicks might be struggling back and forth to keep the twang in and out of a rousing rendition of “Whoomp (There It Is),” and that's just one of many interesting situations.
