Apple iSight

PC Magazine
28 March 2008
  • Excerpt: Unlike the other cameras in this roundup, the Apple iSight ($149) is FireWire-based. It supports 640-by-480 VGA resolution and has excellent video quality. We are very pleased with the iSight's design, and we like its built-in microphone, which delivers very clear audio for videoconferencing. The iSight is also the only camera here that has auto-focus.

  • Summary: If you’re a Mac user, the iSight is the only webcam you should be considering. It’s expensive, but in terms of quality and ease-of-use it’s a clear winner.
  • Pros: Built-in noise suppression microphone, slick alloy casing, image quality, autofocus, mounting options
  • Cons: Full functionality only possible with iChat AV, not compatible with Windows systems, expensive, image settings not adjustable

  • Conclusion: I like the Apple iSight: it's sexy, smart (but not too smart) and does the job well. I'm disappointed about the autofocus not being as automatic and I'm annoyed about having to install iChatAV just to get the thing working.
