Summary: I bought this several years ago as way to keep in touch with my grandma abroad without the cost of long distance calls. When it works its great, it rings out and the call quality is good. However it seems to go through periods when it doesnt want to sign in proprely, and then it magically works again. unfortunately there does not seem to be a great offering when it comes to pc independent skype phones so this would still be in the top 3 that I would buy today.
Summary: Unfortunately, although the SPH200D does a lot of things right, it is lacking in some basic functionality which, if you've used a phone in the last decade or more, you really will expect. Although it supports Caller ID, at the time of writing, with the latest firmware (18.104.22.168) the handset still only displays the phone number ringing you and does not perform a reverse lookup into your contacts list to display a name, if a match is found.
Summary: The best thing that can be said for this product is that it works. The handset is very cheap and shoddy with poor quality plastic buttons and a poor quality display. The supplied Ethernet cable appeared to be old and not at all flexible. When first hooked up, the setup would not work. Tried to contact the Netgear telephone support line but after being on hold for 15 min and being repeatedly told I was a "valued customer" nobody wanted to talk to me.
