User Review

Chris B., Newegg

  • Pros: High quality dictation device with enough recording time for anything I'm planning on using it for.
  • Cons: Not as much space as it could have, but the quality more than makes up for it.

Good value for price

LRP, Amazon
15 October 2009
  • Summary: I am a physician and use this for dictation of patient visits. This is a great unit except for one small issue. There is no way to review your dictation in any particular file while you are dictating, and then resume dictating.

Warning: Creates DRM-restricted files!

Roman Pennington, Amazon

  • Summary: I have been mostly pleased with the DS-40 since I received it. The key word here is VOICE RECORDER. This unit is optimized for voice frequencies, and even at its highest quality setting, it only records 64Kbps quality (less than half the resolution of an average-quality MP3).

Olympus DS-40: Handle with Care

B. Simon, Amazon
2 March 2009
  • Summary: Much good has been written about the Olympus DS-40, both here and elsewhere. I would support most of what has been written in that regard and focus here on what I find to be some tragic flaws in what would otherwise be a well functioning and well designed recorder. Handling noise is significant.

Not Disappointed At All

Mark, Amazon
30 October 2008
  • Summary: I got this digital recorder due to new regulations in my business that require certain phone calls to be recorded. After using this for several days now it has worked flawlessly. I also purchased the TP7 accessory that you simply plug into the DS-40 mic input and put the earbud into your ear while...

Great quality, Great product

Cosmin S., Newegg
20 June 2008
  • Summary: After I bought it, I saw the accessories (remote control, protective case) that come with the DS-50, and would have probably purchased that one if it was available on newegg. Now I gotta find the remote somewhere, since that would be really useful, case would be nice too.
  • Pros: Great recording quality, enough space to take good quality recordings, lots of good features, easy to use, small and light weight, can play mp3s (but does not save as mp3), low battery usage, backlight, Linux support (as a USB storage device, play the WMA files with mplayer). Can be used as a USB...
  • Cons: The software and device drivers that come with it is for Windows only.

Brownie "Brownie", Amazon
29 May 2008
  • Summary: This is an excellent voice recorder, but don't get it if you wish to record live music or your practice sessions with a guitar or piano. I tried it and the resulting sound was just plain awful--just one mushy sound. I returned it to Amazon and bought the LS-10 which just arrived today.

DS-40

Rick S., Newegg
11 April 2008
  • Summary: I have never used the ear pieces and probably won't, but it's nice to have them anyway. I'd recommend this recorder to anybody. It's worth the price for what you have at your disposal.
  • Pros: I love this thing. It has exceeded my expectations. Though solid feeling for its size, it is light enough so that you don't realize it's in your shirt pocket. It records great, and the capacity is too. I record classes. I just set it on the table, and it picks up every voice in the room clearly a...
  • Cons: The default voice prompting and the voice itself, are obnoxious and inappropriate, as far as I'm concerned. Think about it. You are in a public forum, or a private interview, and when you turn on your recorder, you and everyone else within 75 feet, hears this ridiculous voice everytime you naviga...

Surprised by the sound quality

Paul E., Newegg
8 April 2008
  • Summary: I ran a meeting with 35 people in a training room with 4 rows of tables. I set down the recorder on the second row and was amazed at how well it picked up people speaking from across the room. Great product.
  • Pros: Small, stereo, good option set, 3 mike sensitivity settings, easy to use, great sound pickup, 5 sound quality levels, detachable stereo mike (with a mono mike under it), index markers, can be run as either Audio or Storage USB (when run as "audio usb class" it tells your computer it's a microphon...
  • Cons: While the body is nice metal, the detachable mike is cheap plastic. I was surprised when I powered it on and it started talking to me, turning off the voice prompts was one of the first things I did though, & I don't like the idea of space on the device used to hold the voice prompt sound files w...

As advertised

Jeremy W., Newegg
27 March 2008
  • Summary: Great recorder, I do a fair amount of field recording and just with the included mic I can pick up so many things that I don't even hear in person. It's nice to be able to listen through the headphones at the same time you are recording.
  • Pros: Small, easy to use, many accessories, effective stereo mic, attractive, light, battery life, easy transfer
  • Cons: outdoor recording pics up a lot of wind noise with the stereo mic, more could have been done
