The Sony GV-D200 is a digital video walkman VCR that is compatible with Video 8 and Hi8 (NTSC) formats. When playing Digital8, the VCR offers a maximum resolution of 520 lines with thrice the color bandwidth of VHS. Video noise is also reduced. Media recording in Hi8 or 8mm tapes can be played in either SP or LP modes.

The player is enclosed in dark gray plastic and has the approximate dimensions of 5.89 x 2.0 x 5.38 inches (W x H x D) and weight of 1.44 pounds. It has DC power input and output ports located at its rear panel while its system components control bus is located at the front. Other terminals are located at its side panels. These include a 4 pin mini-DIN S-Video output, a Composite video input, a Mini-phone stereo 3.5 mm headphone port, a 4 pin FireWire IEEE 1394 port, an RCA phono  Audio line-out, an Audio line-in, an RCA phono Composite video output, a 4 pin mini-DIN S-Video input, and a Mini-phone stereo 3.5 mm Control-L (LANC).

Through the GV-D200’s IEEE 1394 port, real-time analog to digital conversion is available. This feature is commonly used for editing as it allows users to pass-through an analog signal to a computer without having to record it digitally first. Other easy editing features of the GV-D200 is its 20-Segment Assemble Edit that allows users to connect the player to other camcorders and VCRs, select up to 20 different scenes, and compile them. Stereo music and narration can also be added to recordings without affecting the original audio tracks.

Other features of the Sony GV-D200 include its Super LaserLink system, its Crystal Clear Still/Slow Motion and Frame-by-Frame Advance capabilities, and its Time Base Correction (TBC) functions. It also features 2X playback in forward and reverse, 2X Playback zoom into selected areas of videos, and Digital Noise Reduction up to 20% when recording.
