  • Summary: The self-propelled feature is the best feature of this vac. However, the vac's wider base is fine if cleaning long expanses but difficult maneuvering around furniture. The cord windup is cumbersome.

Careful buying a used vacuum

Jon Winningham, Amazon
15 February 2014
  • Summary: Although the vacuum arrived nice and clean, it was missing the screws that secure the handle to the body. Also the clips that hold the extension wands were broken and the filter was filthy. When I plugged the vacuum in, the motor made a awful smell and funny sound and did not come up to full power.

6-month Review

D. Card "Bushman", Amazon
12 December 2012
  • Summary: After reading reviews and seeing that Consumer Reports rated this so high, I went for it. Now I wish I had not. Nothing at all has broken and the vacuum works, there are just some major design flaws that I cannot believe made it to the consumer market. Pros 1) Oh man is this thing powerful.

Hoover vacuum

pat, Amazon
13 November 2012
  • Summary: Received the product and assembled it without a problem. I turned the vacuum on and it ran for about 30 seconds then it stopped forward movement and started to smoke. We checked settings and removed and replace handle. The brush rollers would not turn.

  • Summary: This is one of a series of Hoover vacuums that have the same poorly designed power switch and belt mechanisms. Both mechanisms are so badly planned and executed that they fail repeatedly, requiring unscrewing cover plates and resetting the parts so that they will function.

18 months later ......

gatorhiker, Amazon
19 January 2012
  • Summary: The vacuum was okay, but I wasn't as happy with it as I expected to be. Now 18 months after purchasing it it has stopped working but has a 3 year warranty so I'm working to see what Hoover can do for me.

Major Problem:

Disappointed, ABT Electronics
20 October 2010
  • Excerpt: The first time I tried to use it after we unpacked it, the brushes would not turn. I had to take it to a Hoover dealer in Chicago to have it fixed. Evidently the belt was off. I assume it was put on incorrectly at the factory. Hopefully that does not indicate it's future performance.
  • Cons: Brushes would not turn

Not for hard floors

E. Mcginnis, Amazon
21 January 2010
  • Summary: I have a dog, 2 cats, small kids and mostly hardwoods and area rugs. I bought this vacuum based on Consumer Reports high rating for my needs. The self propelled function works great in the one room with wall to wall carpet, but on the tile and hard woods, the vacuum is careening out of control.

Hoping this is a quirk ... but I'm still disappointed.

wildflowr, Amazon
12 June 2009
  • Summary: Reading some of the negative reviews on this product (the Y6485900 model), I had a few reservations but, given the approval of the majority of reviewers and Consumer Rpts recommendation, I went ahead with my purchase in June 2009 and had no complaints: it arrived safely by the first of July,...

Disappointed in Amazon

Catfish John, Amazon
12 June 2009
  • Summary: I received the vacuum from Amazon and, when I opened the box, it was obvious that the vacuum was not "factory fresh". I could tell by the way the vacuum was packed in the box, and by the way the packing tape was applied, that the unit must have been opened,re-packaged,returned, and sold as "new" by...
