Has some downsides
5 March 2008
Summary: I have the JDP2GB-120, so perhaps things have changed since I bought it about a year ago. I hope they have, because a thumbdrive that requires more power than a USB keyboard port can provide is a big downside, IMHO. Other than that and the difficult to remove cap, it's a fine drive...
Pros: Good speed, durable housing
Cons: Cap is hard to remove, doesn't work in keyboard USB ports
Summary: First of all, the cap is very tight on there. Hard to pull off, which actually could be a good thing if you are worried about losing your cap. I do like it that the key ring loop is at the USB end instead of the cap end.
Pros: Nice read/write speed, nice 2GB size. Armored like a tank!
Cons: Very bulky. It's shiny and cool looking online, but having to haul this thing on my key-chain is just too much. It's very big and gets in the way. At this point I'd probably get a flash drive that has a slide functionality, much like a box knife.
Summary: I returned the drive to newegg and they issued a refund. I rarely buy anything from local computer stores anymore because I'm please with the huge product line at newegg, they have more than fair prices and I have always been happy with their return or exchange policy.
Pros: Looks sharp. Fast and fairly priced.
Cons: Cap cover cracked within a week of use. On three different computers running win xp, secure partition could only be accessed once per session. Had to reboot computers to access driveagain. I've owned 2 other secure Lexars and not had this issue before.
Summary: This drive comes with special software preloaded to create a secure partition on the drive. However, on two machines I used it on the drive wiped itself and the preloaded software was gone. I had to contact Lexar to get a copy of the software and to unlock and format the drive to make it work again.
Summary: I should add that I was one of the first purchasers of this product and have owned this for about 10 months. Perhaps they have solved some of these mechanical issues. We actually bought two of these. Both have the same mechanical issues.
Pros: Transfers large files very quickly. Looks nice when new. Liftime warranty (which you will need!)
Cons: The case is terrible. After a few weeks, the cap disintegrated. A few weeks after that, the small window fell off. A few more months later, it stopped being recognized by any computer unless I put an upwards pressure on it. I sent the unit in for repair/replacement today. :-( At least it has a li...
