Don’t let the lack of LED backlighting deter you from the XBR9, especially if you’re on a budget. As the generations of top-notch XBR sets before it attest, Sony knows how to build a quality CCFL-backlit LCD television, and the XBR9 is no exception. Besides outstanding picture quality, the XBR9 offers built-in Internet connectivity and other lush features you would expect from an XBR, for far less than either of Sony’s older or newer LED-backlit alternatives. The Sony Bravia KDL-52XBR9 is a seriously good HDTV. We found that it aced most of our tests, producing the best scores we've seen for black level, peak white and the contrast ratio imbetween. It also scored highly in our color tests, and produced smooth, attractive motion without loosing too many of the fine details that make a moving image attractive. Read more
Price : $3,400 At A Glance : Great detail and color • Lower black level than most conventional LCDs • Integrated Internet TV • Menu system not my fave • Some off-axis discoloration The Right Stuff I’m old enough to remember when Sony introduced its first XBR models, which were top-of-the-line CRT TVs. The Sony Bravia KDL-52XBR9 HDTV presents clear, well-balanced images, and it also offers an astonishingly large selection of Internet-video options. On top of that, its comprehensive DLNA- and USB-based multimedia tools are not only easy to use but fun, too. High quality and extras go a long way in justifying the set’s steep estimated street price ($2000 as of 12/8/09). Read more

We replaced a 17-year-old TV with this unit and couldn't be happier. The picture quality is outstanding whether you're watching a show from a roof top antenna, or through a blue ray player. The only complaint is about the sound -- the internal speakers just don't do the picture justice. This is a minor irritation as I was planning on connecting this TV to an amplified sound system anyway. Sony has always been a great performer. Read more

Picked this up from OneCall along with a Sony STR-D1000 and then added a Sony BDP-S360 Blu-Ray player and a set of Paradigm Cinema 110 5.1 speaker set for a "budget" home theater for the family room. Great picture quality on HD cable, Blu-Ray, regular DVD. I really like the way all the Sony components work together...put a disk in the player, TV turns on, the receiver sets to Blu-Ray, turns the TV on, and sets for "theater" mode. Read more
