Sony’s tellies are marching proudly towards a new golden age, matching superb visuals with surprisingly affordable price-tags. Hardly budget priced but a bargain nonetheless. Read more

    • LCD tellies have a shelf life comparable to accident-prone mayflies, so it’s a joy to find a futureproof-ish, Full HD flat screen that concentrates on picture, sound a...
    • No, colours aren’t as rich nor blacks as solid as those on the LED-powered 46X4500, but that particular vixen costs twice as much as this foxy lady. Don’t expect too m...

The W5500 is the uncontested successor to the W4500. Only the narrow angle of vision for blacks may discourage some viewers. Read more

    • Excellent contrast, Good ergonomics overall (menus, on-screen manual, remote...), Variety of settings, Effective 100 Hz Motionflow
    • Reduced angle of vision (the blacks get lighter), No 200 Hz Motionflow

Add one of Sony's more successful sound performances to its frequently dazzling pictures, and you've got an excellent all-round TV that just shows what the brand is capable of when it's not being undermined by that recurring backlight consistency flaw. Read more

    • Generally excellent picture quality, lots of features, good connectivity
    • The AppliCast online system is a waste of time, standard def skin can look a touch waxy, and it's not particularly cheap

For those who can't afford one of Sony's exceptional X4500 LED-backlit TVs, the fantastic functionality and performance of the surprisingly affordable Bravia KDL-46W5500 should do the trick. Read more

    • Excellent picture quality, Good connectivity and multimedia functionality, Decent audio, Good value

Finally decided to upgrade my old Trintron CRT and spent the past 3 months or so looking at the various LCDs available out there. I initially settled on a Sony KDL46W4500 after seeing one in a store and was just about to part with my hard earned cash when I started reading reviews and read about the so-called dreaded 'backlight bleed'. Given the high cost of the Sony, this completely put me off, so it was back to the drawing board for me. Read more
