Bringing together a mixture of good and not-so-good elements, the LE700 isn't good enough to make it to the top of our list. However, it still marks a real step forward in terms of energy consumption, where it's the most efficient TV we've ever seen. Read more

    • Very low energy consumption, Good contrast
    • No rotating stand, Ghosting far too visible, Image quality drops off at viewing angles above 35-40°, On screen menus showing their age

In fact, adding to the potential importance of this feature is the fact that our main criticism of the LE600E models has been the extent to which they suffer from motion blur. So if the 40LE700E can put this issue to bed, we're likely to be very happy bunnies. Read more

    • Excellent contrast, Good value for LED, Rich colours, Good colour management
    • Motion handling issues, Blooming, Soft Freeview pictures

The lingering motion blur is a weakness, so sports fans and members of the Jason Statham fan-club might prefer an alternative that copes a little better with high-speed action. However, the bright and vivid imagery, and the crisp contrast of the LC40LE700E are very pleasing to the eye, especially when bringing out the detail in high-definition content. It’s not quite a knockout blow for Sharp’s rivals, but it certainly puts Sharp back in the game once more. Read more

Lesser issues find a few quite overt backlight inconsistencies creeping in when you view the screen from an angle, and a fairly feeble sound performance. These, though, are insignificant flaws compared with the motion problems, which are comfortably worse on the 40LE700E than they are on any of our other contenders today. Read more

    • Dark scenes look great, colours are vibrant, good price for an LED TV
    • Motion blur, limited viewing angle, average audio, limited multimedia facilities, no Freeview HD

Despite confidently reaffirming direct LED backlighting’s talents with black level and contrast, and delivering occasionally excellent HD images, the Sharp LC-40LE700E ultimately proves that direct LED lighting isn’t itself enough to guarantee a TrustedReviews Recommended badge. You’ve also got to nail the other stuff - particularly LCD’s response time/motion blur problem. Read more
