Samsung LN40A650 40" LCD HDTV Review
23 July 2009
Conclusion: The Samsung LN40A650 LCD is not terribly different from the Samsung PN50A650 plasma. In fact they are identical in almost every regard but there were differences that were seen. Some of these differences were minor cosmetic changes, the positioning of internal speakers, the addition of a fan, but the major differences came during operation and how the HDTV handled motion and the “feel” of the picture.
Pros: Picture quality is top-notch, White balance/color seemed to look a tad better, Beautiful Touch of Color, ATSC tuner is great, Anti-reflective coating is good, Good amount of features like WiseLink and Info-Link, Swiveling stand, Independent picture settings for each input, Bundle of ferrite cores and mounting gear, Illuminated remote, Better sounding audio than PN50A650 because of positioning, The rear of the HDTV is now glossy black, instead of boring mat...
Cons: Switching video sources needs improving, Channel list shouldn’t be erased after scanning, just add new channels onto existing, Anti-reflective coating doesn’t fully eliminate reflections in bright conditions, PIP is somewhat useless for me, LCD clouding, LCD backlight bleeding, Bad viewing angles. Color accuracy changes.
Summary: While some panels - both in LCD monitors and TVs have issues keeping color uniform when viewing from different angles, the viewing angle on the LN40A650 claims to be a nice broad 178° both horizontal and vertical. While many other displays I've used do indeed produce some sort of picture at these angles, the quality of the image is less that ideal - much less. Take a look below at the viewing angle shots from a frame from the Transformers movie.
Pros: 120Hz Auto Motion Plus, Good contrast ratio - thanks to good blacks, Lots of inputs, Vivid picture and good sound
Cons: Slow power on sequence, Color boosted to unrealistic levels by default, Computer connected text is a bit fuzzy
Summary: If you don't mind its red frame, the Samsung LN52A650 LCD TV will reward you with a massive feature set and excellent picture quality.
Pros: Superb black-level performance; highly accurate color; improved 120Hz de-judder video processing; fine standard-definition processing; broad selection of picture setup options; can display weather, news, and stock info onscreen; energy-efficient compared with most like-size LCDs.
Cons: Relatively expensive; red-colored frame isn't for everyone; shiny screen reflects ambient room lighting; some artifacts when de-judder modes are engaged; awkward click wheel remote.
Summary: While the image can be a little noisy at times, the incredible blacks and great contrast ratio, along with the speedy refresh rate, make the Samsung LA40A650 one of the better full HD LCDs on the market.
Pros: Great contrast, excellent motion rendering, accurate colours, well-implemented 100Hz mode
Cons: Some noise in the image, a little oversharpening on text, glossy finish
