Samsung’s HP- S5053 plasma HDTV striking features make it stand out in any room. Its imposing 50-inch panel and gleaming black stand and cabinet combined with a blue-lit power button and brushed-metal accent make this set an absolute attention grabber. The HP- S5053 plasma has a pleasing image quality and the realistic skin tones; strong contrasts and right colors are all maintained very well. Best of all the Samsung HP- S5053 plasma scored brilliantly at the DVD tests, which are very difficult. The Samsung HP-S5043, with its 1,366x768 pixel resolution displays in minute detail all incoming 720p HDTV programs. All standard definition DVD, TV, computer and HDTV signals are scaled so they can fit the native resolution.

Though the problem of burn-in is usually not encountered in plasmas used at home, Samsung has taken the extra precaution of providing three protection methods. The first on is a pixel shift, which over time slightly moves the image around the screen. The second protection method is a scrolling black-to-white ramp and the third on is a full white field. The Samsung HP-S5043 also features two modes for energy saving. One method limits the brightness of the peak and the second adjusts the brightness to suit the room lighting.

Most of the video and audio ports (including 2 HDMI inputs) of the HP-S5053 are housed at the back and face out so they can be easily identified. This set additionally offers composite, headphone and S-video jacks on the side. These are useful if you want hook up any device such as a camcorder, temporarily. A CableCard slot is not included.

The remote has a lot of improved features including an improved longer shape that is easier to hold. The button layout is definitely smarter and it is easier to differentiate between the keys.

Absence of backlighting was drawback, but this was offset by its ability to control four other devices. Worth mentioning is the option of choosing and renaming inputs from the menu and also the information which helpfully explained the different menu items.
