With a strong product line under its belt, one would expect nothing but the best from Pioneer and the Pioneer PDP-5060HD does not disappoint. With a strong product line under its belt, one would expect nothing but the best from Pioneer and the Pioneer PDP-5060HD does not disappoint. With a slight problem in picture quality in previous plasma models, Pioneer has learned its lesson well and delivers a product that is sure to please, at a moderate price of around $5,000.

With a visual appeal similar to other plasmas on the market, the 50 inch Pioneer is neither exceptional nor gargantuan with regard to looks. It comes with a standard remote that is handily backlit for viewing in low light settings. Also noteworthy is the universal feature of the remote, allowing it to control a wide range of audiovisual equipment. The system also boasts the standard Pioneer speakers, which produce a nice audio effect, but do not blow the listener away.

The Pioneer comes with a laundry list of high end features as well as many of the predictable standards. Of note is a ATSC tuner, CableCard and picture in picture. It also has a wide array of connectivity features including two HDMI ports. This feature however is somewhat inaccurate as the use of the HDMI feature renders the component video input inoperable.

With excellent picture clarity the Pioneer shows great detail, however the red levels can be a bit overstated, requiring some manual manipulation. Furthermore the unit shows great control with blackness. It also proves stellar in showing clearness in dark scene elements. The unit also performs well in high motion settings showing minimal smearing of images.

Pioneer continues to get it right with its PDP5060, while it is priced at the high end of moderate, it is a best pick for a movie aficionado.
