  • Summary: If you are serious about getting into astronomy, this is the best Nexstar to get, and the best overall in my opinion.
  • Pros: Portable, easy to align, does not require much regular maintenance
  • Cons: Chews through batteries and not the best at viewing deep space objects

Excellent Beginner Scope

steve n Maryland, Orion Telescopes & Binoculars
27 June 2014
  • Excerpt: I've now had this item about 2 years with lots of use so I feel I'm well versed in it's capabilities. This scope can be AMAZING. Remember that you need quality optics AND GOOD/GREAT VIEWING CONDITIONS w/ANY SCOPE. Views of Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Venus & the moon are exceptional. DSOs like Orion, Ring, Dumbell nebulas & a host of others can be jaw dropping. I use it in light polluted areas as well as Star Party dark sites and I've had great results.
  • Pros: Accurate, Compact, Easy to Use, Lightweight, Quality Lenses
  • Cons: Tripod Is A Little Shaky

As expected

Fred e, B&H Photo
8 May 2014
  • Excerpt: The telescope was fairly easy to set up, but I did not fair so well in doing the 3 star alignment. I eventually found out that the finder or star scope was not aligned to the telescope. Rather basic error after I realized it, but it was not mentioned in the instructions. The software package led me to believe you needed to install it, but was really only for backup. A RS-232 to USB cable was not included despite that connection has not been on laptops for many years.
  • Pros: Well Packed
  • Cons: Difficult to Use, Lack Of Information, Need To Update Materials, Unclear instructions

Underwhelming

Buck, Orion Telescopes & Binoculars
5 April 2014
  • Excerpt: I was able to see two atmospheric bands of Jupiter with some difficulty (I used several lenses and verified the collimation) and the Orion Nebula was very faint smudge. I expected more from the telescope of the year.
  • Pros: Accurate, Compact, Easy to Use
  • Cons: Difficult To Focus, Poor Lens Quality

  • Excerpt: First telescope. Have not had the opportunity to use it much. Did manage to align with three star method fairly quickly . The packaging was great and received the the telescope quickly . The Construction of the scope is very good. However, The wired key pad Is sort of hard to read, especially when your in the dark. We'll I need more time with telescope to discover its capabilities and limits.
  • Pros: Accurate, Easy to Use, Strong Construction

Working well so far

Andrea, Orion Telescopes & Binoculars

  • Excerpt: Package got here very quickly, even over a holiday week. Nothing was damaged and everything was in great condition on arrival. Props to Celestron for their packaging. Had to leave town after getting it but tried it out quickly and got great views of the lunar surface and Jupiter and its moons. I could even see the bands of Jupiter, just with the eyepiece that comes with the telescope!
  • Pros: Accurate, Compact, Easy to Use, Lightweight, Quality Lenses, Strong Construction

BEWARE: outer box spoils the surprise!!

Misha, Orion Telescopes & Binoculars
10 December 2013
  • Excerpt: I had to write a review just to alert buyers, especially around the holidays, that this product arrives in a box with "Celestron" written in huge letters and the telescope model/name written beneath it. This COMPLETELY ruined the Christmas surprise for the person for whom I bought it. I emailed and called Hayneedle customer service, but they didn't offer any resolution.
  • Cons: Packaging Ruins Surprise

  • Excerpt: I have studied the stars for 30years with an old refractor telescope. so happy i choose the NexStar 6 SE for my new purchase.. beautiful optics.it's pretty big so glad i didn't choose the 8". easy to set up and use. I don't use the goto. just use the arrows to navigate the sky as I already know where everything is. Hope to take some astrophotography as i have seen some good results.Chuffed!
