Summary: My wife bought this for me for Father's Day. For the money, I think the telescope is really great. The large aperature really captures light. Aligning and using an equatorial mount is hard. There are good youtube videos that really help you with alignment and use. You'll need them as the instructions aren't the most complete. Big con is the equatorial mount. The mounting screw that attachs the mount to the tripod effectively failed after a week.
Pros: great aperture and light-gathering for the price easy enough set up
Cons: non-functioning equatorial mount poor instructions -- youtube will save you here. poor finderscope
Excerpt: I bought this telescope for the family. It was easy to assemble but temporarily lost one of parts for the counter-weight. Everything went smoothly and the directions were easy to follow. Orienting the Star Finder was the hardest part.
Pros: Accurate, Easy to Use, Quality Lenses, Strong Construction
Excerpt: The Scope gives me excellent light capture and giving a very nice view of planets and dim stars surrounding the objective that 114 EQ does not do as well. Some have said its too heavy but I can carry it around (a little muscle, yes) by removing the counterweights first. The scope dismounted, itself, is very mild in weight.
Excerpt: It's time I got back into Astronomy and Celestron was the telescope I decided to purchase..I had ordered the AsteroMaster 114 EQ and it arrived as promised..Upon examination there were two defects with this unit...Defects were from shipping (packaging shifting causing a set screw to snap off)) and manufacturing (mirror coating flaking off)...Called for return label and at the same time I placed a order(upgraded)for the AstroMaster 130 EQ.
Pros: Accurate, Compact, Easy to Use, Lightweight, Quality Lenses
Excerpt: I have had this for about a month now and like it a lot. The setup was fairly simple, about 20 minutes. Instructions were easy. Then about another 10 balancing the EQ mount weights. Star finder on the scope seemed difficult to use at first but made adjustments to it focusing on a distant terrestrial object in the day and then it was much better at night. Tripod is decent but wobbles a bit under the weight of the telescope. I wish they made the legs a bit sturdier.
Excerpt: I ordered the Celestron AstroMaster 130 EQ Reflector Telescope on a Sunday night and it arrived 4 days later with the free ground shipping well ahead of the original time estimate, I was very pleased with that. I also ordered a collimation eye piece and Zhumell 1.25 in. eyepiece and filter kit (they also arrived the same day). It was very easy to assemble the telescope, and balance it according to the instructions.
Pros: Accurate, Quality Lenses, Strong Construction
