Toshiba Portege M400

2 November 2007
  • Conclusion: The Toshiba M400 is a bargain among Windows XP Tablet Edition convertibles. The Core Duo (now standard), SATA hard drive, optical drive and plenty of ports make this a very capable portable, yet the notebook is light and very compact. We love having the internal CD-RW/DVD drive and the dual layer DVD burner is an enticing option. The biometric fingerprint scanner and hardware level security work well and is a must for those who carry sensitive data.
  • Pros: Good performance and very good battery life. Plenty of ports, good viewing angle, internal optical drive means you can watch DVDs on the plane. Intel wired and wireless networking are strong and the Bluetooth option offers 2.0 + EDR speeds. Biometric fingerprint scanner secures your data from prying eyes.
  • Cons: Standard XGA resolution doesn't put the M400 ahead of the tablet competition. No recovery media included so you must burn your own CDs (about 10 of them!).

Expert Review

12 March 2007
  • Summary: After it was all said and done the M400 ended up being a solid computer. It does not have the "wow" factor of the company's upcoming R400 tablet or the features of Lenovo's Thinkpad X60 tablet, but it gets the job done. The system has no intentions of reinventing the tablet, but it still manages to have great features, like an optical drive, which is a rarity for small tablets and integrated Verizon EV-DO wireless is a big selling point for business users.

Toshiba M400 Tablet PC Review

11 April 2007
  • Summary: If I worked back at the corporate or attended a lot of meetings where discussing things with a team and sharing digital forms of those discussions was important, then look no further than the Toshiba Portégé M400 Tablet PC.
  • Cons: Very noisy CPU fan, not exactly something you can use in bed late at night quietly, No DVI out directly in the notebook, you need to buy the replicator, No chassis finger print reader, making it difficult to use in notebook operation. Screen wants to swivel when trying to use, and is awkward to try and swipe, Windows key in an annoying place. Personally years of standard placement has made me a creature of habit, No Touchpad shortcuts, additional controls or illuminat...
