The Sony Xperia Tablet S gets design right, performance, not so much
1 January 2013
Summary: The Xperia Tablet S has an excellent design, but there are cheaper alternatives that provide similar and better tablet experiences.
Pros: The Sony Xperia Tablet S has a comfortable, high-quality design, a sharp-looking screen, storage expansion, and potential as a universal remote alternative.
Cons: Unfortunately Wi-Fi currently shuts off whenever the tablet sleeps, waking the tablet from sleep takes way too long, and its screen flickers intermittently. Price is a bit high for what's offered.
Conclusion: There is a lot to love about Sony’s new tablet. It looks good, has a smooth user interface, and its size makes it comfortable to hold. The downsides are mostly quality-control issues. Sony has fixed a paralyzing Wi-Fi bug, but we’ve had issues pressing the power button and found elements of the hardware a little cheap, despite the fact that the tablet looks and feels quite premium. The camera is also disappointing, even for a tablet.
Pros: Comfortable, good-looking design, Great screen size, Smooth user interface, Good battery life, Full SD port
Cons: Wi-Fi glitch, Random hardware problems, Bad camera & camera app, Proprietary charger, Poorly designed default keyboard
Conclusion: The Sony Xperia Tablet S is a solid home entertainment focused Android tablet, with an elegant design and some useful built in extras, but mild performance issues and poor battery life temper our enthusiasm.
Pros: Universal remote. Unique and ergonomic design. Useful Android tweaks. Fast performance. Splashproof.
Cons: HDMI requires dongle. Some Wi-Fi connectivity issues. Below average battery life.
Conclusion: Overall, the Xperia S is good value for the high-spec screen, fast performance and storage on offer, but the battery life is very poor compared to other similar devices. µ The Sony Xperia S offers a fantastic display and great multimedia features, but is let down by very poor battery life. It also needs an upgrade to Android Ice Cream Sandwich.
Pros: High-quality display, great camera, good for multimedia, decent storage.
Cons: Large form factor is awkward for typing., Poor battery life.
