Summary: Not sure if this unit is defective or if it is just built poorly, but using it as an external mic with a GOPRO HD Hero 2 was NOT what I was hoping for. The breakdown of issues in order of least to most severe: 1, It is very quiet. Maybe only 70% of the volume that came from the built-in mic that comes with the GOPRO.
Summary: This is a great looking, high quality built mic. However it is not working with my samsung Galaxy Note N7000 nor with the iPhone. Kind of lame. Also NOT working with macbookpro 5 stars for built and quality 1 for not working.
Summary: I bought it recently for dual use with my camera (Cannon 5D)and recorder. It's condensed mic, so not surprisingly quality of a sound was higher. By it's nature it's a small mic, so it has some range of use. I use it mostly between 3-25 feet and it works great. Sound is significantly CLEARER, but of course sound is not as LOUD as with other devices. So I can see why people been rate it down. Again, it's condensed mic, it supposed to do that.
Needs Power: Power Source must be 'Plug-In' Power Capability

Summary: Not and evaluation of the product but some professional info you'd find helpful: The SONY ECM-DS30P is an Electret Condenser Microphone and it's Power Source must be plug-in power capability. Meaning; it needs power (as most 'Electret Condensers') from a compatible mic (input) port to operate correctly.
Summary: works great in audacity and ACID pro (but in acid it doesn't capture stereo with my drivers, no big deal, Microphone captures voice around the room and can be boosted afterwards in an audio editor. I would definitely recommend this to a friend.
Great mic with use of the Kodak Zi8 - recording loud bands

Summary: Got this in combination with Kodak Zi8 Pocket Video Camera (Black) . The combination with a big memory card was still under $150.. great little device for HD and condenser mic audio. You will want a right angle connector like HOSA RT. ANGLE STEREO 3.5mm (M) - STEREO 3.5MM (F) or something similar to make the left and right channel correct. Summary: I purchased this to use with the Kodak Zi8. I was shocked to find out how terrible the sound quality was when I received it. In fact, I found that the sound with the built in microphone was better than this Sony mic. Not recommended with the Kodak. Pros: Easy to plug in Includes carrying case for mic Cons: Terribly low sound quality. Picks up all background noise.
