Excerpt: I bought the AKG Perception 170 to mic my tabla drums. My previous mic for this purpose was the trusty SM57. Couldn't be happier with the AKG! I use one mic for both drums. Placed over the bass drum, it picks up both well. Plenty of gain, picks up highs better than lows. Love this mic! Bang for the buck for sure!
Summary: I bought this microphone for usage in my home music recordings. The mic works very well in its recordings of acoustic guitars, and was even surprisingly good for vocals to an extent. Having said that, I did encounter a problem with a certain high-frequency hum being emitted from the mic after several usages. This hum was alleviated with the -10dB pad, but is a pesky and noticeable presence without the pad.
Excerpt: Don't let the low price tag scare you away... I bought a pair over two years ago, and I've used them like crazy. I used them mostly for drum overheads, both live and in studio, and they hold their own very well. I've heard of people complaining because they may get damaged when dropped. It's a condenser, of course it will! But in my experience with them, they've proved to be durable. Not a problem with them yet!
Pros: Clear Sound, Compact, Durable, Easy To Use, Lightweight
Summary: Bought this along with another AKG 170 to mic strings, voice, and piano. I've been happy with the results. AKG doesn't claim that it is a vocal mic, but it does pretty well anyway. Nice clear sound, especially for strings, and two together work great on piano!
