Summary: An amazing unit! I purchased this to replace my Onkyo receiver which met its demise after 30 years of flawless service. The reason I chose Yamaha was for that sound that only Yamaha has. The clarity and depth realy shine when you switch on the pure direct switch. Very VERY pleased with this unit and I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for great amp that won't break the bank.
Summary: I bought this to replace and old JVC unit with a blown channel. I am pushing some old Hitachi floor speakers with it and they sound much better than my old JVC. I am using 2 zones, one zone about 40 ft away in a exercise room pushing some P163 Infinity bookshelves, the other zone neck to my PC in my 'man cave'. It is a very nice amp but this is obviously a unsophisticated review.
Summary: This met all my needs VERY well, and I am very pleased. Love the clean and simple design, and really love the actual knobs. I looked at other amplifiers in the same price range, and lots of main functionality nowadays is relegated to the remote, or push buttons. I like old school knobs. You know. The kind you actually turn! The only slight nit-picky thing, and it is an extremely minor one, is the lack of a small white stripe indicator on the Volume control.
Summary: i initially got the Yamaha as201 receiver and trade it in for the as300, and what a difference. This unit is more dynamic has highs, middle and lows. The nobs are plastic, but look like metal. The speaker wire connectors are really nice. Bought the unit to test my DIY speaker builds, and it will do nicely.
Summary: Handsome, simple design. It's nice to see that Yamaha realizes people want a bass and treble knob. Equalizers are ridiculous. This powers four Polk bookshelf speakers and I have two Polk subwoofers running as well which required a y cable running from the LFE. The remote has a nice metal face and is straightforward. The volume knob is a sore spot with some fellow reviewers as they think it looks cheap but that seems to me to be nitpicking. Beautifully simple unit.
Summary: This amp really opened up my speakers. I'm getting more detail with better staging, Power to spare; I'm running quality book shelves, and the decibels at full gain will chase grease off a gridle. This is not a pretty unit. All black, with tiny LEDs, it sits looking gloomy and unusable. I also don't like having some functions dependent on the remote.
Summary: I ordered the A-S300 to replace my 30 year old power amp. My Brother has a Yamaha Reciever and he really likes it, so I took the chance. In a word, it sounds great. I called Crutchfield support with some questions about hooking up verious components and they were very helpful. I will definetly order from Crutchfield again!
Pros: Easy to set up. Fits perfectly in my Entertainment center. The "Pure Direct" mode is a great feature. Controls are simple and easy to use. Great overall sound. Great customer service from Crutchfield.
Cons: Non! Unless you like super heavy bass, which I don't!
