NuForce uDAC-2 USB DAC/Headphone Amp (Playback 40)
14 July 2011
Excerpt: Depending on your point of view, these are either interesting or confusing times in the audio world because of changes in the concepts behind pieces of audio gear. D/A conversion, server architectures, and packaging for desktop and mobile use are all in flux. The various boxes that do audio things are not static in their conceptualization, something that even computer-oriented people occasionally find baffling.
Summary: The USB DAC packs great sound quality and convenience into one small package. Even compared to premium sound cards like Asus Xonar D2X, the uDAC-2 can stand out in a class of its own and it certainly makes a convincing case at $129.
Pros: Great sound quality, Solid build quality, Small form factor, Easy to use/set up
Cons: Sacrifices some fine details for smoothness, Price may not be for everyone
Excerpt: I have mentioned in the last few reviews that I am now reviewing headphones using the NuForce uDAC-2 USB amp/DAC plugged into my new iMac, when I am not using my iPod. There’s a really good reason for this. The iMac audio output sounds like … well, let’s just say it sounds bad. Really, really bad.
Pros: Amazing sound improvement over iMac and MacBook DACs, USB powered, Simple to set up
