ASUS Xonar HDAV 1.3 Deluxe sound card review

Elite Bastards
25 March 2012
  • Conclusion: As I moved towards writing the conclusion to this review, the word 'comprehensive' was rattling around in my head to describe the Xonar HDAV's list of features.  Then it began to dawn on me that 'comprehensive' really wasn't a strong enough word considering just how much functionality is on show here, so let me try this out for size: As discrete sound cards go, the Xonar HDAV 1.3 Deluxe offers a complete set of functionality worthy of any audiophile's attention.

Asus Xonar HDAV 1.3 Slim

  • Excerpt: There’s no good reason for the existence of Asus’s Xonar HDAV 1.3 Slim soundcard, and yet it’s a godsend for those of us who want to hear the high-definition soundtracks on so many of the Hollywood movies released on Blu-ray disc. Blame Microsoft for the contradiction: No one would need a product like this if Vista provided a protected audio path.
  • Pros: Delivers HD audio from a home-theater PC without downsampling; low-profile design.
  • Cons: There's no PCI Express version; compatible only with ArcSoft's TotalMedia Theatre.

ASUS Xonar HDAV1.3 Slim Audio Card

  • Summary: Over the course of this review, my opinion of this card has gradually improved alongside the software and drivers. Initially I wasn't very impressed, but could see the potential. With each updated version of the drivers and player I've become just a little more comfortable with the card. I'm happy to say that today I'm extremely satisfied with its performance.
  • Pros: » Includes low profile mounting bracket, » smaller form factor a plus for many HTPC's, » No external power source required, » Currently the least expensive HTPC bit streaming option, » Includes HDMI and DVI cables, » Installation was relatively straight forward, » Driver and software support is ongoing
  • Cons: » Beta software required to make it work properly, » No apparent integration with Windows Media Center, » Early adopters may have purchased TotalMedia Theatre Player 3 needlessly, » Poor DVD playback.

ASUS Xonar HDAV1.3 Slim Sound Card

Benchmark Reviews
10 May 2009
  • Conclusion: I particularly liked the packaging ASUS has put forth with the Xonar HDAV 1.3 Slim sound card with it's non glossy matted finish, it's just a nice change from the norm. Of course, I also liked the whole black and gold color scheme, it just adds a certain touch of sophistication and quality. I didn't particularly like the very tiny screws that hold the mounting bracket onto the sound card, I found it much too difficult to replace it with the low profile bracket.
  • Pros: Slim profile, 8 channel Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding, HDMI cables included, Low to no CPU load
  • Cons: Low profile bracket difficult to install, Mixed use of electrolytic and solid state capacitors, Premium price
