Click, Pop, Buzz... do NOT buy this card if you are going to record with it.
Joe Bag O' Donuts, Amazon
3 April 2014
Summary: This card is advertised and touted all over the internet for its reproduction quality, its performance, and its quiet operation. My experience was far from any of these. I received the card in good condition, in retail packaging. I installed the unit in my PC, installed the drivers, and played a few test songs through a pair of very high-quality headphones. I was thrilled with the performance, and believed I'd found a card that works exactly as advertised.
Excerpt: I purchased an ASUS CM6870 from B&H in April and have been very pleased with the performance for non-audio photographer apps HOWEVER the audio has never worked properly from the very beginning. After endless hours of installing drivers and talking to their useless customer support people I decided to purchase the Xonar Essence STX since I am also an audiophile - simply put the first card did not work or the replacement - so now the PC and the card are being sent to ASUS.
Asus Xonar Essence STX - Quality, Quality, Quality!
24 January 2012
Excerpt: Connectivity-wise, the card has 6.3mm TRS connections for headphones & microphones. The remainders are RCA out and optical. Most quality headphones will come with an adapter for 3.5mm to 6.3mm. The advantages of the larger connector are for easier "blind" insertion and for increased durability. Anyone who claims they improve sound quality on their own is fooling themselves. Beware of low quality adapters though.
Excerpt: The driver support for win 7 64 was so bad. You can look throughout forums for hours and find that no one's resolved this simple issue. After countless screwed up installs, restarts, driver sweeping, I said screw it. I took a break and when my head was right again I simply set the compatibility for win 7. SOLVED. OMG you have no idea how relieved I was. I almost cried... Haha.
Excerpt: This is a card designed and marketed to the audiophile audience. It should be understood from the get-go that this is NOT a card for gamers and falls fairly short of the EAX processing capabilities of any card from the SoundBlaster lineup. Where this card does excel at is music reproduction, and that is what we're going to talk about now.
Excerpt: In my view, the STX is a bit overrated because every review you read out there makes it perfect. This was not my experience and I learned it the hard way. I purchased this card after seeing it recommended everywhere. The reviews were stellar and I pulled the trigger. The card arrived and I was impressed by the build quality. Asus did a nice job. First thing I noticed is that this thing is huge.
Summary: I ran this on a Gigabyte Z87OC board, and had horrible popping from the audio processor via SPDIF output when playing games (some worse than others), mixing tracks (including pausing, stopping and starting), when O/S start up and shutting down. I tried the latest drivers, Asus Xonar Uni drivers, I tried different PCIex slots... and I tried different latency configs just to see, but no, it still happened.
Summary: I recently bought one of these from Amazon. I installed it but Windows did not detect it. I downloaded the latest driver for Windows 8, released by Asus on 2nd April 2013. It didn't work. I have trawled the web for answers and found so many people with the same problem it is amazing. I have tried every piece of advice, changing Bios settings, checking the power, different drivers and so on.
