Hmm

Jason L., Newegg
30 January 2012
  • Pros: Audio quality is great. Timing is another issue...
  • Cons: Silly issues such as audio lag and an awesome clicking noise coming from the physical card whenever you reboot. At the end of the day, not really much better than built-in motherboard audio, and a waste of money.

drivers suck

Phil D., Newegg
29 April 2010
  • Summary: There was a post on the ASUS msg boards (around april fools day no less), that ASUS will be releasing new Xonar drivers every 6 months. We'll see...
  • Pros: Nice looking. Great packaging. EMI shield.
  • Cons: Drivers are OLD and buggy. Expect BSOD on win7 64 bit. Also expect lags. For instance playing Torchlight, it'll stall 300 or 400 ms during the 1st attack-- seemingly to init buffers or something. Once that stall takes place, sound is fine the rest of the game. ASUS has a horrible horrible track r...

User Review

28 December 2009
  • Summary: For 200 dollars, you'd expect a soundcard to not have this problem. You'd also expect Asus to fix it, but it's been well over a year since this was reported to them in their VIP forums.
  • Pros: The sound quality is top notch for an internal computer soundcard. Listening to music is a great experience, upsampling channels works, and the detail and sound quality is amazing. The things you hear about the sound quality of this card being phenomenal are very true. It even sounds great with m...
  • Cons: There is one giant flaw with this card, and it's that some programs, when crashing and playing audio, will continue to loop the last few hundred of milliseconds over and over if that program crashes. The only remedy is to reboot your computer or disable then reenable your sound card driver in dev...

Superior sound, lies about features

Chris B., Newegg
4 February 2009
  • Summary: Update to the beta drivers, don't expect EAX 3 or 4 support, it's EAX 1, 2, and 5. Why? I have no clue. EAX is enabled by clicking the 'gx' button on your control panel. I suggest not using it. Drivers have not been updated since august, and they're still beta.
  • Pros: Very clear sound, many useful features and useful bundled software. The lighted jacks are fun. Let me put it this way: I'm not afraid I'm going to get left out in the cold by asus on the drivers, and I thought the support was better than a certain EAX creating company, and to an extent it is.
  • Cons: EAX support is terrible, it makes the sound tinny, just without highs. The bass is almost gone. It sounds like they converted all sound to 96KBPS MP3s. It crashes many games, butchers the sound on others, and is overall very very cruddy. The drivers will, when you get a 5.1 hookup, say the rear s...

When it works, it's beautiful

Anonymous, Newegg
20 October 2008
  • Summary: Disclaimer: Using 2-way analog sound only. No experience with 7.1 or digitial in/out.
  • Pros: Works better in Windows. Where it sounds beautiful. Virtually certain I'm hearing stuff that wasn't making it off the noise floor of previous sound systems I've used, including Creative X-Fi.
  • Cons: It's not as beautiful in Linux. I suspect there is no dedicated equalizer block on the board. This may be my fault as there are probably PCM plugins I can utilize that will do the job. For those wondering, the ALSA hardware driver is "snd-virtuoso". Motherboard and/or OS incompatibility is a poss...

Price too High!!!

Brian J., Newegg
3 October 2008
  • Summary: I like newegg and have been buying from them for a 7 or 8 years now but I still look around because I know their habits.
  • Pros: Awesome card but can be had for much less at Now Direct com. I ordered mine the other day and got it for $I66 and free shipping (and yes I still get the rebate because its a manufacturer rebate...so 135 after 30 dollar rebate).
  • Cons: Newegg plays these little games when rebates come along where they jack up the price and absorb some of the rebate money as increased profit margins.

I give it a 'C' and it could slide further :[

  • Summary: As with any product for a computer I don't expect it to work flawlessly, but if you do need help be prepared to wait for ASUS page to load. NOWAY TO SAVE SETTINGS. I feel sorry for anyone who doesn't find a setting and keep it.
  • Pros: Multiple options and tweeks. Okay with Vista, Good for music. daniel_k joined the forums!!
  • Cons: Oh boy....Asus' slow website, "digital speakers" in the documentation( hint:no such thing for commercial use), steep learning curve, hit and miss with 3D games.

Could have been a contender

Clayton M., Newegg
22 June 2008
  • Summary: At first I was pleased with the Xonar, it installed easily and once the software was installed ran just fine but then I started to find that it causing problems in too many of games that I run such as Aces High II where the sounds were so messed up I had to turn many of them off to play.
  • Pros: Easy installation, digital sound very nice, added a new depth of sound in some games
  • Cons: Software unpolished, incompatible with too many titles, start of every sound clipped off, unable to locate newer XP drivers

Problems with line inputs- both cards

Joseph I., Newegg
30 March 2008
  • Summary: It is a shame as I really liked the sound of the card but will probabaly not go for another try. Customer support at ASUS answered quickly but were pretty lame. It was evident they had little knowledge if any regarding the audio card and were of no help. Probabaly focus on their motherboards etc.
  • Pros: Very good sound when listening to computer sourced audio ie: Rhapsody, onboard drives etc. Easy to use interface. Great looking
  • Cons: First card line in did not work at all and had to return for a replacement. Line-in on second card has continuous crackling sound. Itried it with a variety of sources including my sattelite dish, cd player etc. all with same results. Even tried different amplified speakers thing they might have b...

My motherboard won't detect it...

Jacob R., Newegg
16 February 2008
  • Summary: I spent about 8 hours trying to fix this card last night. I don't believe it's a problem with the card, but a problem with the motherboard resource allocation. Hopefully the PCI version will fix this. The motherboard is the XFX 680i SLI board.
  • Pros: A couple features compared to Creative sound cards made me buy this one. I'm sure it would be very nice. I will have to get the PCI version.
  • Cons: I have Vista 64 bit. In the device manager, an item called "PCI Express to PCI bridge" was given code 12, where it couldn't find enough resources. I was not permitted to change the resources. I found a conflicting I/O range between the "root port" and the bridge. I have my BIOS updated, I have ch...
