Summary: I wish I'd known before I ordered 3 of these, now I am having my remote office ship the server back so we can install an additional network card and disable the on-board em0.
Pros: Good price, good build.
Cons: One of the two mobo network ports is completely unusable in Linux. There's a known issue with that 82579LM chip and driver that causes the network card to go to sleep for 5 to 10 seconds every few minutes even if you disable power management. Not fun with VOIP traffic. DONT RUN LINUX on this box ...
Summary: I am very pleased with this bare server. the board has server grade features. Mine is running a xeon, needed for vt-d pci passthrough. It can generate a bit of heat, and I upgraded the fan that has best sight of the CPU.
Summary: I just got one of these servers white labeled by another company. I'm posting just to share the memory module it shipped with, in case that helps somebody. The motherboard is X9SCL-F. The memory modules installed in it are 2GB Samsung M391B5773DH0-CK0. Hope this helps!
Pros: Excellent set of features for the money. Real server, not a desktop system repackaged in a 1U chassis. This mobo includes IPMI. Space for two 3 1/2" hard drives. Accessories include mounting brackets for a slim note-book style DVD drive.
Cons: Doesn't come with rails and this server is too heavy and deep to safely mount only by its ears. Plan on getting the rails: MCP-290-00004-03 with it. Maybe -1 star is too harsh for this fault.
Summary: I have ~10 of these in production and 3 backplanes have failed while running under normal operations in the last 16 months. Only solution is to remove the backplane making the drives no longer hot swappable. Enjoy the downtime.
Pros: Hot swap, power efficient, 80+ GOLD PSU's.
Cons: Backplanes consistently fail after 6 - 24 months.
Summary: As another reviewer said, these things are VERY picky with memory, and the supported memory list contains two entries, neither of which you can find. I've purchased several of these units over the years (obviously not exactly the same, but the same series/level), and it seems like the memory type...
Pros: Small form factor Quiet Works great if you can find the right memory.
Cons: Documented memory selection small and useless.
Cons: ... the Port #6, that is used by the Riser, is bad in 2 servers. The BIOS update to 2.0b, as suggested by their support, did not help at all. They obviously forgot to wire it right. I ended up removing top cover, inserting various PCIe cards in ports #7, #6, #4 directly, and they worked in 7 and ...
Summary: Update to my previous review. I have contacted Supermicro support regarding the issue with the riser (cards not detected or not working properly). They got back advising to update the BIOS to 2.0b.
Pros: Helpful support
Cons: Shipped with outdated BIOS without the riser support (apparently this slipped through their QA)
