Good light RAID box

  • Pros: Good price, solid build quality, LSI RAID controller works great with supported OS. I have 2 of these loaded with fast SAS drives in RAID 10 and use them both as database replication slaves. They power through most workloads without breaking a sweat.
  • Cons: LSI driver installation is non-standard for Red Hat ES 5.1. Be sure to download the latest from the Supermicro website and read all the docs!

  • Summary: The LSI Megaraid 1068E Controller doesn't not have any RAID drivers for FreeBSD. FreeBSD 6.x install will see the harddrives but will not detect the Logical drives. So you will not be able to do any hot swap. I had to use the Intel RAID controller to actually do RAID-1.
  • Pros: Affordable price. It’s a nice server for the price. Setup is pretty easy. Comes with rails. Supermicro Support is very good.
  • Cons: The documentation can be somewhat lacking. Doesn't have any information on the LSI MegaRAID chip it has.
