Good stuff overall

Collin B., Newegg
16 February 2009
  • Summary: I bought this as a file/media server and it serves that purpose fairly well. Specs: *Windows 2K3 Server Enterprise Edition *Intel Xeon E3110 3.00GHZ CPU *ZALMAN 9500A 92mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler *G.SKILL 6GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 *2, 1TB WD RE3 7200RPM HDDs in a RAID 0 array *Radeon HD 3650 512MB...
  • Pros: Solid case (build quality, style, airflow), clean and handy motherboard layout, hot swappable drive bays are sweet (but see cons), easy to setup and has an in-depth instructions manual.
  • Cons: The Software-based RAID really takes a LOT away from this setup. It's a huge PITA trying to get a floppy with the correct drivers every time you want to install a new OS. SuperMicro went through the effort of designing the case with hot-swappable bays but didn't think to include a hardware RAID c...

Nice machine

Kevin H., Newegg

  • Summary: If you're going to be putting a RAID card or video card in this thing that don't have fans on their heat sinks expect them to get really hot and that heat will soak into surrounding equipment. Adaptec RAID card got so hot I touched it and burned my finger when it was building a new array.
  • Pros: VERY quiet, hot swap drive sleds don't feel that cheap. Fast with good ram and a Core 2 Quad. Lots of internal and external connections.
  • Cons: Cooling suffers a little from the lack of a rear fan.

Good quiet server

Andrew W., Newegg

  • Summary: The RAID system on this board is not true hardware RAID -- software drivers are required for RAID support. If there are no drivers for your operating system, you are out of luck. I had to use Linux software raid unfortunately.
  • Pros: The server has a quality feel to it and has a logical layout making components easy to get to -- no removing the power supply to install RAM etc. When paired with a fast CPU and 1033 RAM, it's extremely quick. And best of all -- this server is QUIET when turned on. I have this server in a room ne...
  • Cons: The front door covering the drive bays is flimsy and seems like it will break. Spare power supply was very hard to find -- Newegg, why do you not carry the power supply for this case?

SuperMicro SYS-5035B-TB

Capitol C., Newegg
3 March 2008
  • Summary: All in all great performance in a mid-tower package. This one gets a thumbs up.
  • Pros: Supermicro performance and reliability at a great price. This system comes with a 6 channel SATA RAID system on the motherboard with native support for RAID 0/1/5/10, 4 hot swappable drive bays with carriers, and mounting space for additional SATA and IDE devices. Additional EIDE and floppy port ...
  • Cons: Supermicro doesn't include cables for the additional IDE or floppy ports with the system. When used in RAID mode, the SATA RAID system doesn't allow for additional non-RAID devices to be pluged into the SATA ports (SATA DVD & etc.) Need to load vendor supplied SATA RAID driver from floppy during ...
