Lenovo RD430

  • Summary: As long as you factor in that this comes with no hot-swap caddies you will be happy. For me having the rails included outweighed the need to buy the drive caddies, and doing so allowed me to save a lot of money over buying the whole drive unit directly from lenovo.
  • Pros: This is a very well built server and the documentation that comes with it is excellent. It has been rock solid over the past few months.
  • Cons: You either have to purchase hard drives from lenovo as a premium, or buy the hot-swap drive caddies separately and install your own hard drives yourself.

Ok price, Hidden Expenses

  • Summary: This was my first rack mounted server purchase. I picked this unit since I have had several good experiences with Lenovo brand laptops and pc's, Since I wanted to avoid any unforceene hickups I decided to go against my better judgment and buy a pre-built unit.
  • Pros: Well built, with decent hardware. Ordered this server along with (8) 2tb Seegate hard drives.
  • Cons: Does not come with Drive caddy's. To get them you either have to spend just under $400 to buy (1) 1tb hard disk sold through Lenovo with the caddy attached, or spend over a week calling IBM to try and order them. Lenovo does not supply the part on its own, and IBM will send you on a nightmarish journey through dozens of automated answering services,, one after another.
