Summary: This never was very easy to use and then died causing my wife and I to lose a number of pictures that were important to us. I use Google Drive now as backup and there is no reason for this to exist in my life.
Summary: This server has worked well and would probably rate more stars if I only owned Windows machines. The product is sold as a PC/Mac-compatible storage device, but that is true only in the sense that it is used as storage as they define it. I was looking for a storage device that I could use as not just a common store point, but more importantly a backup site for all of my workstations, PC and Mac.
Summary: When I needed it most, it failed. I/O errors during attempted backup. My PC is HP, my server is HP, why the trouble? Don't know, and it doesn't matter. All that matter is all data lost. See the pic I attached. Update. Spent hours on the phone with HP. Now it works occasionally. But the backup feature still does not work. When I attempted a backup as a test, I got 'I/O' errors every few minutes, eventually becoming so frequent I could not complete the backup.
If You Use Mac or Windows 7 STAY AWAY FROM LX195!!!

Summary: Let me say up front I like this machine. It is small and capable, and upgradeable. It also is so finicky that you will spend more time dealing with the devices "issues" rather than ever backing up machines with it. I purchased one of these servers. The price was right .. $199. The hard drive was way to small, so I upgraded the device to a 2TB drive. As part of this upgrade I had to perform server recovery .. this is where the fun begins.
Missing key elements. Quit working after 4 months. HP Cust. Service is really bad.

Summary: ^^ ** Key Point: While this machine is very nice and fast with the Atom Processor and Windows Home Server - it lacks redundancy. This is a huge problem if you want to make sure you never lose your pictures or home movies of the kids .... you can add an external drive - but at that point it costs as much as a server with redundancy ... The HP MediaSmart Server is a bit of a weird niche product.
Summary: I bought 2 HP Media Vaults - MV2020 for storage capacity and print server capabilities. One held all my files from the past 20 years, including priceless family photos, and the other was purely backup. Both have failed catastrophically within several days of each other!! Discs spinning loudly as though out of control, unable to shutdown, and burning smell.
Summary: Sad to say, I could not get this latest rendition from Hp to function properly. I spent a total of seven hours with HP's techs (both of whom knew their stuff--free call, English speaking Canadians), but we could not get it to perform. The server (slick, small, and an impressive design)simply would not connect with my primary client(PC). Nor could I get it to enter recovery mode.
