Dell PowerEdge R420

PC Magazine
7 January 2013
  • Conclusion: The R420 is a very good choice for a small business server rack. The impressive performance we saw from this server came from a configuration that costs over $10,000 list price, not every small business will be able to afford that performance.
  • Pros: Runs quiet and cool. Built-in redundancy for power, connectivity and data. LCD status on front. Very good I/O performance.
  • Cons: Maximum performance configuration can cost upwards of $10,000.

Dell PowerEdge R420 review

8 January 2013
  • Summary: Despite the limitations of the 1U format, the PowerEdge R420 is a very scalable rack mount server, capable of supporting demanding workloads in space-constrained environments. Correctly specified, it’s a real force to be reckoned with.
  • Pros: Dual sockets for Xeon E5-2400 processors; up to 384GB RAM; eight hot-swap drive bays; iDRAC 7 management; optional embedded hypervisor
  • Cons: No hot-swap fans; RAID configuration a little complicated
