User Review

Anonymous, Newegg
9 April 2011
  • Summary: I've read about the Hard Drive failiure on the internet, but I was hoping that it wouldn't happen to me... Anyways, it`s still under warranty, but it would prefer not to have to return the Item. I'm happy that I have 2 Hard drives installed so I didn't loose any precious data!
  • Pros: Good, non expensive, Mini Server in general. I'm happy with it.
  • Cons: Hard Drive fail within 2 months...

Horrible Customer Service

Matt P., Newegg
29 March 2011
  • Summary: It would be 5 if it wasn't for the CS.
  • Pros: Product works fine, easy interface and easy to upgrade the storage.
  • Cons: The rebate has been out for 3 months and I don't have it. Their response to emails is to call their service phone number. Which is voice menus and took me 15+ minutes (also being hung up on twice) to find the "talk to a human" option buried in the menus.

Good Product - Bad Support

Josh H., Newegg
3 January 2011
  • Summary: I messed around for 2 straight days trying to run the Server Recovery software after putting in a new primary drive. The software runs, and gets to a point where it is trying to init communcation with the server, and just spins till it times out.
  • Pros: The product is very quiet, and does it's job efficiently. The styling is nice and compact, and the case seems to be high quality. I immediately upgraded the hard drives and the RAM with no issues. The included manuals and software are very well put together and thorough. I was impressed that they...
  • Cons: The tech support I received from ASUS is why this product only got 3 eggs instead of five. See Other Thoughts for a more detailed description of the tech support issue. In a nutshell, the Server Recovery software doesn't run on Windows 7 64-Bit (used after you upgrade the primary hard drive). I w...

Pretty good but...

Christopher C., Newegg
23 November 2010
  • Summary: First thing I did was upgrade the hard drives. Remember when upgrading ram that it takes LAPTOP memory. I will probably get about a year of use out of this before I have to upgrade to a real server. Windows home server is really stripped down.
  • Pros: Its a windows based server for a fraction of the cost. Once set up properly it runs pretty good. yourname.homeserver.com is great for family access to pictures. Small form factor
  • Cons: Ended up having to a complete system restore as after an update the system became unstable. RAM upgrade involves motherboard removal. (its laptop memory) Must remote in to change default worgroup from "WorkGroup" to anything else. Should be an option for setting workgroup in setup. Tries to force...

RE Home Server V2 (Vail)

David N., Newegg
26 October 2010
  • Summary: I've been using WHS (V1) for several years on a variety of equipment. WHS is designed to run on very modest hardware. Extra RAM helps when streaming, or if you add any additional software/add-ons. Hard drive capacity (not necessarily speed) is where you'll get the biggest impact.
  • Pros: Should be a solid choice for using current version of Windows Home Server (WHS).
  • Cons: The Atom N280 processor does not support 64-bit. So, this cannot be upgraded to WHS V2 (Vail). 64-bit is a requirement of WHS V2.

Good HW WHServer not so much

Anonymous, Newegg
19 June 2010
  • Summary: Maybe Linux will be a good solution... Asus do you have Linux configured for this product? Lots of useful info at the WHS user group on the net, just search to find. Wouldn't need to search if the included documentation was decent and the software wasn't crippled.
  • Pros: Hardware nice and sturdy, low power is just what I needed for an always on server to share a couple of printers and some files. Lots of USB and eSATA disk ports.
  • Cons: Windows Home Server - really crippled version of server 2003. Out of the box only good to back up computers and share files. Doesn't want to allow even file sharing if you don't first configure one computer as the control computer and allow total disk backup, not my main interest. Print sharing i...

Works, but backup to 64 bit == FAIL

Anonymous, Newegg
8 May 2010
  • Summary: Not ASUS's fault, but WHS can't easily restore to a 64 bit OS. It backs up the 64 bit drivers, but can't use them. This is just plain horrible. You have to find 32 bit network drivers. MS fail?
  • Pros: Nice package Fairly quiet Easy setup
  • Cons: A bit pricey No Mac or Linux support Client software is not the easiest to configure Restore to 64 bit is a PITA

Can Be Very Frustrating

Furman W., Newegg
8 April 2010
  • Summary: I DO NOT trust the machine to safeguard my files. I have almost 700 movies stored and the thought of this machine eating them has caused me to back them up to another external drive for safe keeping.
  • Pros: Price was great, attractive glossy surface (afterall you won't be touching it after setup). Works well when its working.
  • Cons: I find that every so often it helps to restart the system. I will be non responsive for no apparent reason. When I first rec'd it added a 1.5 TB drive..work immediately with no problem. However, I wanted to replace the orig. 500gig drive with another 1.5 TB drive..and that's where my troubles beg...
