great home server

Summary: I hope asus upgrades this server with a new model
Pros: very small footprint, quite, very good bang for the buck, relatively quick data trasnfer rates(check the review in cnet) this little server blows alot of the other name brands out of the game and ive tested its streaming capabilities and all i have to say is it is impresive.even when you have 2 comp...
Cons: setup does take a while to be honest.takes about an hour or so but again you only have to do this once
Summary: I've read about the Hard Drive failiure on the internet, but I was hoping that it wouldn't happen to me... Anyways, it`s still under warranty, but it would prefer not to have to return the Item. I'm happy that I have 2 Hard drives installed so I didn't loose any precious data!
Pros: Good, non expensive, Mini Server in general. I'm happy with it.
Summary: I replaced the initial 500 Gig HD with two 1.5 TB HDs and upgraded RAM to 2 Gig before first power-up, had some issues, but eventually figured out I should install the first drive, restore the WHS OS, then add the second drive (install, then "add" through the Admin console).
Pros: I had been interested in picking up a WHS box for a while, but never really got around to it. Then, when I saw this on sale back in the fall for $179 w/ a 1 TB drive I pulled the trigger, no regrets. I use it for a bit of storage, a bit of remote access and a real backup plan for my laptops. It w...
Cons: I knew what I was buying, but the Cons I had to overcome (and my rationalizations) were: - limited RAM upgrade (only 2 Gigs? That's low by todays standards, but plenty for WHS or other single-function server applications) - only two HD slots (eSATA makes up for that, havent' tested port multiplie...
Pros: Product works fine, easy interface and easy to upgrade the storage.
Cons: The rebate has been out for 3 months and I don't have it. Their response to emails is to call their service phone number. Which is voice menus and took me 15+ minutes (also being hung up on twice) to find the "talk to a human" option buried in the menus.
Summary: Non-existent support on Asus, and very little good info available. Totally agree the ASUS add-ons are pretty useless. I'm happily using ClamAV for WHS, and patched my Mac to backup to the WHS using time machine.
Pros: Very good power utilization
Cons: While it supports Port Multiplier it does support the "right" kind. There are two, CBS and FIS. It supports CBS which means it doesn't work with the MediaSonic HF2-SUS2 across eSata if you install more than one drive. If you put in another PREPARE for endless problems. That array works with no pr...
Summary: I was planning to wipe the drive and install Amahi. I discovered that I can't install it on a headless (no monitor) server until the next version, so I decided to play with Windows Home Server in the mean time.
Pros: The server is quite small, quiet, and consumes little power (~25W). Delivery time was ridiculously fast.
Cons: The expansion capabilities are limited, but I knew that when I bought it, so not really a con. Don't waste your time with ASUS WebStorage or ASUS Xtor Manager (free add-ins that are shipped with the box). ASUS WebStorage (for online backups) feature is absolute garbage... I spent way too much tim...
Pros: Initial setup consisted of plugging it in and turning it on. Just make sure you put in any extra HDs before. You then install software on each computer in your house and it takes care of the rest. This is a great server to have at the house. You can use it to live stream media, download torrent f...
Cons: Initial backups take a good bit of time, but that's to be expected and wireless backups will slow down the computer considerably. Still nothing to worry about though. Just configure backups for 2am.
Summary: The temperature sensors for the hard drives are a bit bugged in mine. One of the hard drives reads 9c, which is obviously impossible. But that could possibly not be the Asus's fault.
Pros: Picked this up for $150 after Thanksgiving. Couldn't have been happier about a home server. I had no problems setting it up through Windows 7 Ultimate. Installed a second 2tb HD to backup all my PCs. Quick and painless.
Cons: It can get a little loud at night while running backups. Thankfully, I have it tucked away in a pantry with the rest of the network connections.
Summary: I messed around for 2 straight days trying to run the Server Recovery software after putting in a new primary drive. The software runs, and gets to a point where it is trying to init communcation with the server, and just spins till it times out.
Pros: The product is very quiet, and does it's job efficiently. The styling is nice and compact, and the case seems to be high quality. I immediately upgraded the hard drives and the RAM with no issues. The included manuals and software are very well put together and thorough. I was impressed that they...
Cons: The tech support I received from ASUS is why this product only got 3 eggs instead of five. See Other Thoughts for a more detailed description of the tech support issue. In a nutshell, the Server Recovery software doesn't run on Windows 7 64-Bit (used after you upgrade the primary hard drive). I w...
