Excerpt: So far I have only scanned slides. Mostly Kodachromes. Main problem I have found is that most of the shadow detail is lost in dense slides - even with the MultiExp mode. These slides are dark, but have details clearly visible when visually inspected. The Sliverfast Scan SW has a bug which makes it very slow on my desktop. On my laptop which is slower, it responds instantly, but once you register the SW, you can only use it on one system.
Excerpt: As a scanner, it works well and as promised, but it's important to remember that the end result will depend on the quality of the negative. I haven't shot film for 10+ years and was excited about transferring my film to digital. The scanner seemed perfect for the task at hand, but I ran into the problem that my negatives needed a fair bit of work to clean them up before I was satisfied.
Pros: Good Bit Depth, Good Resolution
Cons: Attracts Dust, Bad Usability, Not Versatile, Slow
Excerpt: I scan 35mm slides and negatives. After a few tries and fiddling about, it was easier to use the bundled software. It takes about 30 seconds or so to scan a 35mm slide. I'm not trying for super high quality, so for my purposes this scanner is a good solution at a decent price.
Limited Sharpness and Shortcomings of SilverFast Software
28 November 2013
Summary: I am disappointed that I need to use maximum sharpening to achieve the sharpness of the original. The SilverFast 8 software is difficult to use, and it is difficult to get a good scan from a bad negative or transparency. I often get better results using the Plustek Quickscan. However, the Grain and Noise Elimination option (GANE) works well.
Summary: I'd seen a mix of reviews with quite a few major criticisms so I was in two minds whether to buy. In the end, because I had so many slides, I went ahead because it was cheaper in the long run to do my own scanning rather than make use of commercial services, some of which are decidedly poor. The first criticism is the documentation.
Summary: This rating reflects some disappointment with plustec's own technical support centre- see below. My initial impressions of the scanner itself are favourable, I haven't been able to fully try out SilverFast 8 yet but what I've seen so far is impressive and I wouldn't argue with the comments made in the two earlier reviews. The supplier would deserve a 4 star rating for prompt delivery and Amazon score highly for their timely and supportive help when things went wrong.
Summary: Die mitgelieferte Software Silverfast ist reine Beutelschneiderei.
