The Plustek OpticFilm 7600i Ai offers high quality film scanning with a professional level scan utility that gets the most out of the already capable hardware. Read more

    • Hardware based dust and scratch removal. Claimed 7200 pixel per inch optical resolution. Professional level scan utility.
    • Scans only one slide or frame of film at a time. Little to no automation in software.

The S420 is fast, portable and convenient, but design issues and rather average results mean that the asking price is very high for the benefits on offer. Read more

    • Very fast at the default resolution; portable enough to carry around; convenient.
    • Issues with dock design; quality not great; expensive.

  1. Version 8 of SilverFast is a big improvement

The recently-released version 8 is well done and makes the scanner more desirable. I was pleased that I did not find the much-complained-about poor user interface of earlier versions. Plustek promises new buyers a free upgrade to v. 8. I am using a Mac running OS 10.6. Yes, it's complicated software (like Photoshop is at first) but Version 8 comes with a helpful Workflow Pilot to assist you at first. Read more or see product

Being a professional photojournalist, I have used Nikon scanners with scsi adapters and pci scsi cards. How much time you spend on setting up those scanners? The first image you start scanning with scsi scanners like nikon LS 1000 and others is after setting up takes about 45 minutes (pc startup with scanner attached and it could say "there is not device" or error 000 something. • Perfect for a professional as it is handy, fast enough to scan slides as well as negs with good quality.
    • Do not see any wrong thing with this product

This scanner is better than any flatbed for scanning 35mm. While it is not quite as good as the Nikon scanners it is still really good and alot cheaper than the used Nikon scanners ($1500+). This is giving me scans as good at the DImage IV scanner I used to have. That one would no longer accept the slide holder. The good news is this one being a manual feed will never have that problem so the build quality is higher. Read more

  4. Skip the "AI" version and awful Silverfast; 7600 "SE" works identically

The "SIlverfast" bundled software is quite simply a disaster, with no sign of that it will be fixed. It does not work or even install on any sort of recent Macintosh computers. You may think you're getting a bargain by having a license for some expensive software come "for free" with the scanner, but the reality is that it is worse than useless. Read more or see product
