Summary: Check the date of the reviews! The most positive reviews are years old, which makes a big difference when it comes to software compatibility! I have had the Nikon Super Coolscan 4000 for years now, and I have always loved the high quality scans it produces.
Summary: I was a photo pro in the Bahamas for 3 years in the 80's and have thousands of slides of the underwater environment in my archives. This scanner worked better than any other I have tried in archiving my slides digitally in a large enough file size to allow for great looking prints.
Summary: I've been using the 4000 for years, and it have proved to be an outstanding product. The slide feeder attachment is incredibly useful, and the NikonScan software works nicely. (The Vista update does work with Windows 7, by the way.) It also works very well with VueScan.
Like the scanner, but here's more reason to hate the company

Summary: This scanner really captures the color nuances better than my Canon 4400F did, and it avoids the washed-out highlights that the Canon produced. And it's great with the SF-210 slide feeder to munch thru stacks of pictures. Do try to get it with the OEM firewire board by Ratoc.
Summary: Greetings from 2011! I'm still using the Nikon "SUPER COOL(!)"Scan 4000 that I purchased in 2000. This thing is a battleship, "Hard"-ware in the literal sense! BUT... If you purchase something from the Nikon line of scanners be prepared to jump through some hoops in order to use it.
Summary: I have been using this device since 2002, this year(2010) I have been scanning my collection of slides (>4300 slides). 5 boxes (10 tray per box) to Kodak slide trays (140 capacity). I also use the SF-200 35mm automatic feeding slide tray.
Summary: I have been using the 4000 ED to capture/scan all of my old 35mm negatives (going all the way back the early 1970's). The pictures I am able to print from these scanned negatives are better that the prints made from the negatives!
Summary: I use this to scan 35mm slides for digital prints up to 13x19" so I use the full 4000 ppi capability. I've found it to be easy to use and the final scanned quality to be excellent. Compared to the HP PhotoSmart scanner I was previously using, it's outstanding. The dust removal feature is awesome.
