Unhappy...don't know why an Amazon "Used" unit is Incomplete (lacking essentials for use) is, I guess, salvaged and broken

Chris Larson, Amazon
24 February 2014
  • Summary: Shipment incomplete, (no data cord, wrong Adapter, no Cd Software, no owner's manual) told it was "as is", damaged unit, doesn't work. Trying to get a refund.

Great, if you can get it dialed in.

unsharpmask, Ebay
22 July 2013
  • Summary: If you are buying this used, beware that a layer of dust on the mirror and lens inside the unit will degrade scanning quality drastically. Once you get it dialed in, this scanner will deliver pro level scans. I'm using Vuescan on my MacPro and it is speedy, less than 30 seconds a scan. Make sure you have all the components that comes with the original unit, it is hard to track down parts.

Hardware is great, but no working software!

Aaron Swepston, Amazon
8 May 2013
  • Summary: Check the date of the reviews! The most positive reviews are years old, which makes a big difference when it comes to software compatibility! I have had the Nikon Super Coolscan 4000 for years now, and I have always loved the high quality scans it produces. The problem is that Nikon has not supported this scanner in terms of scanner drivers or scanning software.

Archives

  • Summary: I was a photo pro in the Bahamas for 3 years in the 80's and have thousands of slides of the underwater environment in my archives. This scanner worked better than any other I have tried in archiving my slides digitally in a large enough file size to allow for great looking prints.

A workhorse!

William A. Smith "Polymath", Amazon
11 November 2012
  • Summary: I've been using the 4000 for years, and it have proved to be an outstanding product. The slide feeder attachment is incredibly useful, and the NikonScan software works nicely. (The Vista update does work with Windows 7, by the way.) It also works very well with VueScan. Highly recommended if you can get it at a reasonable price.

NIKON FAILS TO STOCK PARTS

Anafractuosity, Amazon
17 March 2012
  • Summary: Nikon Super Coolscan 4000 ED Film Scanner Nikon Super Coolscan 4000 ED Film Scanner I own a Coolscan 4000ED and have had nothing but trouble obtaining support and service from Nikon. First, Nikon does not update its scanning software to keep up with changes in the Mac OS so that NikonScan 4 is no longer compatible with recent Mac OS versions. Second and worst of all, the scanner developed a defect that totally skewed color balance.

Decent product, rotten support from Nikon

davidt6517, Ebay
5 May 2011
  • Summary: This scanner really captures the color nuances better than my Canon 4400F did, and it avoids the washed-out highlights that the Canon produced. And it's great with the SF-210 slide feeder to munch thru stacks of pictures. Do try to get it with the OEM firewire board by Ratoc. Not certain quite how necessary this is, but see below. The first problem I had with the scanner was, when the the SF-210 jammed, the software would also lock up.

Like the scanner, but here's more reason to hate the company

Love the Scanner-Loath the Company

David R. Depew, Amazon
2 January 2011
  • Summary: Greetings from 2011! I'm still using the Nikon "SUPER COOL(!)"Scan 4000 that I purchased in 2000. This thing is a battleship, "Hard"-ware in the literal sense! BUT... If you purchase something from the Nikon line of scanners be prepared to jump through some hoops in order to use it. The "Big Deal" here is that this scanner will NOT work with (what I personally consider) "modern" operating systems.
