Good hardware, BAD drivers

Bruce K., Newegg
2 June 2006
  • Pros: The hardware is great. I love the sideways door and the legal page size. Not too loud.
  • Cons: The XP drivers do not work. The HP Director software is so awkward to use that it is nearly impossible to figure out. The updates on HP's web site do not help and in fact cause WinXP to not boot! Very, very poor.

User Review

  • Summary: The scanner ADF sometimes spazzes out. Read the online manual's procedure for clearing paper jams, as it works for clearing up most of the scanner's, "gee I don't want to feed any documents through right now," symptoms.

a mixed bag

Anonymous, Newegg
29 July 2005
  • Summary: I have no complaints about the speed. It is fast and does the job. But after a few batches, it started jamming consistently. I had to return it. Newegg's service is quite good. Better than Amzn. Getting a live person at Amzn is no easy task. But back to the product.

  • Summary: This is my 4th HP scanner and to rate teh scanner I would have to give it 4 stars. Not perfect but very nice and VERY quite. One the other hand the driver and software has got to be the worst I've ever used from HP and only a little better then an old Umax I had.

Amazon
12 July 2004
  • Summary: I previously left a warning that this scanner was incompatible with Mac OS X Panther (10.3.x). However, HP has just released a driver for this scanner, and all compatibilty issues seem to be resolved.

This has worked very well for me for many years ...

E. Klaus, Amazon
12 July 2004
  • Summary: This has worked very well for me for many years. I've used it with Window XP, Windows Vista (64-bit), and Windows 7 (64-bit) and i have never had a problem with it. I can't find any USB 3.0 Flatbed Legal-Sized scanners so i expect to keep this for many more years.

Rubbish

M. Preece, Amazon
12 July 2004
  • Summary: I've had this scanner for over 3 years and I've never got a decent scan out of it. I've had to play around in Photoshop to make anything usable, but detail in never there. Everytime I scan I have to unplug it from the mains then replug it to restart it so that the software can find it.

Mac OSX? Stay clear of this scanner

Round About, Amazon

  • Summary: I use a scanner daily in my work as a college teacher, as I put most of my teaching materials online. I was impressed with the specs of this scanner, revews were positive, and was happy for about two weeks. Then I bought a new Mac G5, OS 10.3 Panther.

Not a professional scanner

S. Barry, Amazon
12 July 2004
  • Summary: Using this scanner is a frustrating experience. The current software from HP's site does not work well with Mac OS X. There is an option to descreen, but it doesn't do anything. The descreening option is either on or off, there are no parameters to set.
