I was very disappointed

Anonymous, Newegg
21 October 2006
  • Summary: If this were a $xx bargain scanner I would understand. But I consider $xxx to be mid range, and yet this performed worse than the scanner included in my Canon all in one! And the HP twain driver is far worse to use than the canon's. It's an OK scanner, but you'd also do fine with a $xx-$xx model.
  • Pros: Lid is very flexible for 3d scanning, installation was easy, product worked first time, not so expensive.
  • Cons: Very dissapointed in scan quality and included software. Despite marketing claims, real optical resolution maxed out at 1200 dpi (higher dpi just blurred image.) Contrast was horrible - even when turning off all filtering, most details were completely lost and couldn't be recovered by photoshop.

Sloooooooooow scanner

Amazon Customer, Amazon

  • Summary: If you are using this to scan images to put on a webpage or to send via email the scanner works great. The default dpi is 200 and when you increase the dpi to create images you can print it slows way down. I would not recommend this scanner if you are looking to print the photos you have scanned.

Functional but glitchy.

pixels and bits, Amazon
25 January 2006
  • Summary: I've been using this scanner for a few years and it has been reasonably dependable. I needed a scanner with a large bed in order to scan book covers and other 3D items. It has worked well for my purposes though it has always had a persistent high pitched squeal whenever it is turned on.

HP does it again

E. D. Avila, Amazon

  • Summary: This is my second hp scanner. The first one worked fine, but was not compatible when I went to XP. Had to buy another scanner. The second one is working well, but is not compatible with Windows 7. They try to give you a small discount on a new scanner. Nice way to make more money.

Mr. A. J. Bow, Amazon

  • Summary: I looked forward to receiving my scanjet 4850. Imagine my feelings when I found that the scanner is not compatible with Windows Vista. The bundled software didn't work with Vista and all that happened was I was given a link to the HP website which allowed me to download drivers which only allow the...
