Summary: I concur with the other reviewers and would like to alert people to HP. Their software is and always has been - FLAKEY. Their peripherals are cheap for a reason - they are unreliable and poor performers. I had to throw this away after months of frustration with it and I am technical.
Summary: I purchased and installed a new HP printer. Now my scanner (HP Scanjet 4850) doesn't work. I've tried the fixes suggested. The system just hangs. Nothing really works. Don't buy this if you intend to connect anything else to your computer.

Summary: I have a Dell Latitude D520 laptop. I received the HP Scanjet 4850 for a Christmas gift. I had requested a "slide scanner" so that I could digitize my boxes of 35 mm slide photographs. I loaded the "HP Image Zone Software" and started having conflicts and error messages immediately.
Summary: Since I first wrote this review I discovered that the fault was not with the scanner but with my computer. After formatting my computer I was able to install the scanner and software without any problems. I am still learning to use it but so far I have decided not to return it.

Summary: I'll start by saying it's generally wise to create a restore point in Windows XP before installing new software. If you want to experiment with this scanner it's essential. I was able to install the software and get the scanner running.
