Summary: I concur with the other reviewers and would like to alert people to HP. Their software is and always has been - FLAKEY. Their peripherals are cheap for a reason - they are unreliable and poor performers. I had to throw this away after months of frustration with it and I am technical. There are so many people with problems with HP their entire website is FULL of patches and fixes for dud software that basically doesn't work.
Summary: I purchased and installed a new HP printer. Now my scanner (HP Scanjet 4850) doesn't work. I've tried the fixes suggested. The system just hangs. Nothing really works. Don't buy this if you intend to connect anything else to your computer.
Summary: I've never been so disappointed with a piece of equipment that I've been moved to write a review here. But after over a year of fighting with this thing, I'm done with it. As stated earlier by someone else, the unit will scan 2 or 3 documents then stop. I would reset it and it would scan a bit more, but now it doesn't scan at all. I tried of it. I, too, want to toss it from my second story apartment window. I'll never buy another HP product if I can help it.
Summary: I bought this item thinking that it would be a great help for me to scan negatives and slides into digital format. Oh boy, was I wrong. The scanner comes with a 450MB software+driver (why so big ???) and although it seems to work the first time, it takes forever to scan anything. The software delivered with the scanner is not user-friendly at all, slow, and doesn't help much.
Summary: I have been trying to install the software for 5 months. No one from HP can even help. Each time I call HP I'm on the phone for at least 15 minutes & the problem still exists. I am not happy with the machine. But I am most unhappy with HP's "technical support".
Summary: I have a Dell Latitude D520 laptop. I received the HP Scanjet 4850 for a Christmas gift. I had requested a "slide scanner" so that I could digitize my boxes of 35 mm slide photographs. I loaded the "HP Image Zone Software" and started having conflicts and error messages immediately. I spent some time searching for common errors and updates on the HP website, thinking a software update from HP would iron out the kinks. Nope.
Summary: Since I first wrote this review I discovered that the fault was not with the scanner but with my computer. After formatting my computer I was able to install the scanner and software without any problems. I am still learning to use it but so far I have decided not to return it. It works well and I like it very much. I apologize if my review has negatively effected anyone's choice.
"Frustrating" does not begin to express my feelings!

Summary: I have now spent more than 10 hours downloading software patches, deleting programs, adding programs, & rebooting -- all to no avail. Not 1 scan has completed successfully. My system is a well maintained Dell Dimension running Windows XP-Home with 512 meg main memory and a 100 gb hard drive that is less than 25% full. I run Norton Systems Works, Corel Paint Shop Pro X and Roxio Easy Media Creator Suite 8 software without problems.
I was skeptical of one star reviews. How I learned my lesson.

Summary: I'll start by saying it's generally wise to create a restore point in Windows XP before installing new software. If you want to experiment with this scanner it's essential. I was able to install the software and get the scanner running. One little clue to trouble ahead was that on rebooting I had to choose myself as the user. Control Panel showed that an invisible user had been created. Anyway, I did get some nice scans of documents and photos.
Summary: I found this scanner at Staples across the street - I grabbed it because it was easy to get. Well, so is VD. It held up for about 1/2 dozen documents, then began crashing: the program ("scan pro") quits every time. Wasted plenty of time trying to find help at the website - wound up chucking the damn thing into the trash with the rest of the kitchen stink. If you're on a mac, don't waste time with HP. I should have known better.
