Cranky, but Still Good

James Charnock, Amazon
22 February 2009
  • Summary: I have used two of these scanners (I keep one in reserve) since 1999. Both still work. But it does not function as well with XP as it did with Windows 98. I agree with the other reviews, but add that it probably only works with the HP photo system (now defunct, also, I believe) called "PrecisionScan...

Good and Economical

Desert Darlene, Amazon

  • Summary: This is a good older scanner that makes decent quality scans. The scanner bed is about 8 1/2 by 11, so if you need to do legal sizes, you might want to reconsider. Overall, I am satisfied with this product.

Great Durability, but a few thing should be noted

Amazon
28 March 2006
  • Summary: posted 3/28/06 by Jack [bawkbawkboo1] This is an old-style, yet long-losting scanner. It has a resolution of 600x600 DPI max, or at least that is what it says when you click on its properties. Thats about 163 KB for one image [it can be adjusted downwards].

Good on Windows 98 but less good on Windows 2000.

  • Excerpt: Overall a simple, easy-to-use scanner that does what it says on the tin, but does have some niggles and is possibly dated when compared with contemporary offerings. I acquired mine from my parents a few years ago having originally recommended it (or at least a HP device) when they wanted to purchase...
  • Pros: Quick (on Windows 98 at least) .  Good quality scans .
  • Cons: Windows 2000 (lack of) support .  No power switch .

  • Excerpt: I brought the Hp scanjet 4200c scanner second hand over two years ago and have found it to be a good buy although due to a dodgy repair by the prevous owner only half of my scanner works but i still say that is one of the best scanners around.
  • Pros: Very quick at preview and scan
  • Cons: Price

  • Excerpt: UPDATE It occurred to me the other day that there is one foolproof way to test the quality of a scanner and a printer. Take a nice crisp £20 note and scan it and then print it and also view it in a decent paint package like PhotoShop.
  • Pros: Almost idiot proof .
  • Cons: I am the idiot .

  • Excerpt: The HP ScanJet 4200Cse is a great scanner for the home use. The 4200C comes in three different packages, (C, Cse & Cxi) the only difference in them is the software that is included. I didn’t have any of the documents only the CD for the software, so I was on my own.

  • Excerpt: I've owned this scanner for over a year now and it has proved to be pratically flawless. I use it for photos, OCR, archeiving, and photocopying. It isn't the highest density scanner available, but it is very easy to setup and use. My favorite features may be the two buttons on the front.
