Bad hardware _and_ software -- avoid this scanner!

Summary: I owned a 5590 until yesterday. It jammed for the last blankety-blank time, when I put a large dollar value check (8.5 x 11") through the document feeder and it jammed halfway through the duplex scan. I couldn't get the software to re-scan, I couldn't get the hardware to release the check on powerdown/up, it wouldn't release by manhandling. So I got out the Torx drivers and started disassembling the scanner.
Didn't work with Windows XP; promised refund; none received!

Summary: This scanner was advertised as compatible with Windows XP. It was not!!! It came with several installation cds, including installation cds for Windows XP and Windows. I tried to install using each, but kept getting error messages that the installation was not complete. I even had my techie son-in-law try, but with the same results.
Summary: The HP Scanjet 5590 failed to work with YEP, a reputable, easy-to-use Filing Software. It worked fairly well as a stand alone; very slow, but it did the job. Research the product thoroughly to make sure it will meet your expectations. Also, a word of warning when buying from a vendor called Galactics. Make sure you read and understand their return provisions and regulations, to avoid deplorable results, as I did, if the product fails to operate.
Summary: I purchased this product about 1-1/2 years ago and regret the day that I did. The automatic sheet feeder is incapable of feeding more than 8 sheets without misfeeding (2 at a time) or jamming. I had to call HP support on 2 occasions at $25.00 a pop because of software issues. Mind you, I cannot speak highly enough of the support from the 2 HP reps' that attended to me. I gave them access to my desktop and they spent hours resolving my problems.
Summary: This is the worst piece of equipment I've ever purchased. It constantly jams or the software acts up. The best part being that if it does jam, you lose the entire file and have to start over again. Stay away!
Excerpt: This comes with really poor assembly instructions -- no words, only pictures and the pictures were Once we got it assembled and tried to scan it was extremely noisy and would only scan from the glass. When I tried to scan from the ADF it would pull the sheets through like it was scanning but the scans were all blank.
Cheap construction, difficult interface, stopped working

Summary: We have two of these at the department I work. One started fogging over on the inside of the glass plate (impossible to clean), the other started having random streaks across scans that are always somewhere else (bad lamp?). On both, the lid broke off because the joints are cheap plastic. Basically, it looks like you're not supposed to use it frequently as a flatbed scanner. Don't buy this piece of junk!
