Bad hardware _and_ software -- avoid this scanner!

Summary: I owned a 5590 until yesterday. It jammed for the last blankety-blank time, when I put a large dollar value check (8.5 x 11") through the document feeder and it jammed halfway through the duplex scan. I couldn't get the software to re-scan, I couldn't get the hardware to release the check on powerdown/up, it wouldn't release by manhandling. So I got out the Torx drivers and started disassembling the scanner.
Summary: Was a good scanner for a month since I bought it. Quit working recently. Had to load the latest driver dated August 19, 2014. Now works, but scans at slightly reduced size. 8.5 x 11 page scans to around 8.45 x 10.85" page - strange.
Summary: I've been using this scanner w/my Mac for over 9 months mostly for scanning into PDF files and have never had a problem. The others i've tried were too small/flimsy, more expensive and took forever to scan. Great buy, really not a lot of choices out there for something like this.
Summary: I bought this scanner back in 2006 as my filing cabinets were bursting at the scenes. Eight years later, I am looking for a replacement. It got the job done, but not without causing its share of frustrations. Setting it up was a nightmare, as it took some fidgeting to get it to talk to my computer. As do most scanners, on occasion the ADF will pull two sheets together, but unlike the newer high end scanners it has no means of detecting this.
