The V500 is a great deal like the scanner version of a poitn and shoot camera, and will take on nearly all the tasks that you require. If you set to home mode, you can take control of some of the settings, inclusive of adjusting your brightness and switching to the professional mode, you will have further control, permitting adjustments in color, balance, saturation and several more.
Some of the features include a 6,400-pixel-per-inch (ppi) optical resolution, making scanning 35mm film an easy task, as well as an LED light that means your new V500 won’t require warm up times, and will scan immediately, rather than the old style warm up period prior to scanning.
Featuring a hardware-based Digital ICE the V500 scanner will digitally remove dust and scratches from your film and render your photos far more cleanly.
The bundled software includes Photoshop Elements, a photo editor of a more sophisticated nature that is reasonable software for the serious amateur in photography.
The OCR program will save recognizable texts for editing and in searchable PDF format.

Works great with Windows VISTA. I've used many scanners, starting with one of the original hand scanners, the most recent being an excellent HP scanner. But the Epson Perfection V500 Photo is by far the best scanner I've ever used. It's fast, quiet, and "smart". It easily identifies separate photos put on the glass at the same time (something other scanners did not do).
