Summary: I am very pleased with this scanner. I am very impressed by the professionalism of its features. It is very complex. I scanned in over 100 color slides and some negatives and am very pleased with the results. And considering its' complexity I consider it pretty easy to use.
Summary: I bought this scanner primarily to scan old photos, negatives and slides into digital format. It does a pretty decent job on all three formats. It seems to be a bit slow but since this is my first scanner, what do I know??? It will also scan documents into .jpg's, bitmaps or pfd pictures - in pdf you can make multiple pic files.
Pretty decent, good for SLIDES, not good for medium fmt or 4x5s

Summary: Does a great job on slides, but be advised, the backlight is a thin strip down the middle of the scanning area, and the preview will only show you this area for selecting the full scan-- and it's not quite wide enough for medium format. If you don't mind cropping your medium format negs a bit it'll do fine, otherwise you'll have to stitch multiple scans together as you can get as tall as you want but it'll only be about 2" wide max.
Summary: First off, I too had a smudge under the glass of mine. It was in the shape of the side of a palm and pinky finger, but without the fingerprint (like the person was wearing a glove). It is obvious in a scan with a very dark background only, otherwise not noticeable at all. Otherwise very clear glass. I had a Visoneer scanner that also had foggy glass (just generally foggy), so no big deal. Now, I have a gripe about this scanner.
Summary: The fact that it opens on the (left) side makes it MUCH easier for me to use than most brands, which open front to back. [I have severe arm weakness and limited range of motion.] Other people with disabilities are always needing to know of products that happen to have good accessibility features because so few mainstream products are intentionally planned that way.
Summary: This is a great scanner, especially for the price. I bought it to digitize my family's old photos, so I've primarily used it to scan color film. It does a great job, though it's not especially fast. My one complaint is with the software, which is not incredibly intuitive and which I've already had to remove and reinstall once, after only about a month's use.
Summary: Of the different Canon, HP, and Epson scanners I've worked with I've always found the Epson to be my favorite. This will be my third. I pass on my old one when I want to upgrade. I'm using this one to scan negatives and I'm very happy with the quality. If your going to reprint your scanned images larger than a 4x6 then be sure to scan at a higher resolution than what it starts at. I'd hate for somebody to scan a ton of negatives before they figured that out.
