Reviews and Problems with Epson Perfection 2400 Photo

Good value with some big caveats.

Summary: I bought this scanner having read the negative comments about the included software, but also the glowing reviews of the scan quality. At this point I would have to say I'm pleased with my purchase in general, but have been frustrated in certain ways. Overall I would have to say this scanner delivers at least fairly good quality in all types of scanning for the price you're paying, but it does not quite achieve professional or near-professional results.
Summary: The product info says it will scan medium format film, but the lousy software will only recognize up to a 4.5x6 cm negative/transparancy. Sice I use 6x7 cm format, this scanner is useless for this purpose. So far, I haven't been able to 'trick' the software into scanning a complete 6x7, nor have I had any luck using Photoshop to do this with this scanner. It would be so much better if Epson would just let the user select the area to be scanned, like HP does.
Summary: I had some problem with the software installation as it just stopped when almost everything was installed. I waited about 45 minutes and it never finished (the installation instructions say it may take up to 20 min.) I called the customer support line (not toll free, but no service charge) and they were helpful. I did not bother reinstalling the software as it had installed what I wanted to use. I was using a G4 Mac computer with OS 9.1.
Summary: This scanner is capable of spectacular results, even from negatives and positive film. However, not all is well. I have two of these (one at work, one at home) and have had frustrating driver problems with them on Windows 2000 machines. On one I upgraded to Photoshop 7 and lost the scanner. On the other my Epson 1270 printer seems to have caused an unrecoverable conflict/corruption.
Excerpt: I bought this specifically because I needed to scan in some colour slides as well as normal document use. I went for the extra high resolution of the 2400 because resolution is very important with slides (and negatives) which are of course very small. If you have USB2, then this scanner is much faster in high resolutions than USB1 scanners or parallel port ones. If you don't, then buy a USB2 card, the're only about a tenner.
Excerpt: I have been using scanner for four months to scan slides it does four at at time and gives ecellent results, I now have to buy a new printer to do it justice. I can tell the difference between a 50ASA and a 200ASA film once enlarged to full screen. Colours are reproduced true to form. The children also find it easy to use. They scan normal photos which also come out well.
